Drive-To-Drive Transferring Question

I just got a new harddrive, and I want to transfer all of the stuff on my old drive to it, and then no longer use my old drive. Do I need to partition and format the new drive before I do so?
 
I'd unplug the old drive, plug in the new one, reinstall windows, plug the old drive back in and transfer your data over. That assuming you are ok with (or its time for) a reinstall.


 
If you don't mind my jumping in, how would you just back up the data and programs? Or would you need to reinstall the programs and just back up any data? Just bought a new HD, so I've got a few questions myself :D . I actually just used DriveImage XML and it worked pretty well. Just wondering if this way would be easier.
 
Haha, actually, I am planning on using Drive Image, and that was what my question was based on...do I need to format/partition the drive before I transfer the data to it? And I'm doing this in hopes that I would not have to reinstall XP, because my XP version is rather old so I'd need to download lots and lots of updates.

Yes, when you run Drive Image, it'll tell you that the drive you are copying to needs to be partitioned. Right now I'm still messing with mine though cause when I swap out drives, I'm not able to boot from my new one. I'll let you know how it goes.
BTW, it took about 3 1/2 hours to copy about 30 gig of data onto my new HD.

:eek: thats so long! I've never used the program though so don't know if it's longer than what should be expected. But wow. Slooow.

Truthfully, it may have been shorter. I just ran it and went to bed so I don't know exactly. When I first started running it, it said there was about 4 hours remaining, but when I checked before I went to bed, it was down to 1 1/2 hours and that was only about 30 minutes later. Do remember though, it was 30 GIG of data thru a 2.5" USB enclosure.
Anyways, it worked like a charm and was very easy except for a couple things I wasn't sure about. I got those questions answered in my thread. You can check it out here--> http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1029712495#post1029712495 .

Ah, 2.5" USB enclosure would explian a lot :)
 
Actually, I downloaded Acronis TrueImage (15-day free trial :cool: ) and that worked perfectly. Took roughly 1.5 hours to image about 150gigs of data.
 
Cool. How did you do the copy? As I said, I have a USB enclosure that I just plugged in and copied right from my laptop onto the new drive.
