Drive slows system down... a lot

Hey All,

I've setup kind of a budget system recently, and have noticed that the system acts like its at 150% CPU usage, even though the CPU read out might only be at 10%, when doing file intensive stuff.

Doing stuff like extracting ISO for example.

My friend and I suspect its got something to do with a memory system.

Whats everyones best guess? Anyone have experience with this?
Is it:
Memory bandwidth?
Chipset IDE issue?
I know it can't be the drive cause it was fine in other systems before.

and how does one fix it?

The system has:
- SIS 661 chipset
- ATA100 Western Digi 120gb 7200rpm drive
- DDR 400 (Single Channel)
- Celeron-D 2.66 running at 2.8

If its a chipset issue, will dropping the drive on a PCI IDE card help?
 
I would try changing the ram to a different module. Quick way to see if your original memory was giving you the problems. Happened to my friend on an older system. He suspected his ram got damaged because of a power outage and no surge ( :eek: ).

btw, how much ram are u using?
 
Try putting in a secondary drive and doing all the file intensive stuff on the secondary drive. Just remember that IDE relies on the CPU to figure out the file transfer computations, unlike SCSI, so whenever you have intense file system stuff going on, it will slow you down. To help with this, you can CTRL-ALT-DEL and set the priority of the task down to LOW.

Which is really low for me, 1gb is my usual minimum for my own stuff :p
unfortunately I have the only DDR system in the house, and I'm too poor to go get some more :(


If its any help, the system runs fine in games and apps, as long as its not doing the said iso extraction, or large file transfer.
 
If you haven't done one in awhile, Do a defrag.

Lots of people skip defragging, and it will kill your system when working with large files after a period of time.
 
I made defrag a weekly ritual :p
Anyone have any experience with the SIS 661 chipset?
I know in the past they've had terrible speeds.
I thought of asking if the Cel-D's lower bus rate have anything to do with it, but I don't think my Tualatin 1.26 has these issues.

edit:
I'm doing a bit of programming right now that involves some large bitmaps...
I'm thinking extra memory will most likely be a huge factor.
