Hello Gents,

I can't get my computer to recognize one of my optical (CDRW) drives. I've checked the jumpers and tried to have windows search for new hardward with no success. I've even gone as far as plug them both into the board as independant drives. (They were master and slave previously). Any ideas?

try cable select and see if you have the molex cables in, then try the drive thats not working by itself . after that are u running lots of other stuff through your power supply?
 
Thanks for the info and sorry for the delay in my responce. I've been away from the computer. I tried cs when they were both running but not with only. However, I did try running one of the alone as the master. As far as the power goes it should be ok but I'll check.

change your IDE cable

ive had about 5 of those little bastards go DOA on me in the last 2yrs and everytime theyre the last thing i check
 
It's not the cable. I've used them both with the one drive that is working. Any other ideas? I'm running out.
 
are you sure this other drive is functional?

because from what I understand your telling us this drive doesnt work on its own as a master or in cable select.

you could try unplugging all molex connections except for the drive in question and see if it comes up

aside from trying that it sounds like RMA time

Did you mean that bios does not detect it either or just windows?
 
check the bios, it might be the ide cable. have you tried to round it , or had to yank on it hard latey. One went bad on me and it took me an hour to switch cable.
 
Thanks for all the info. I'll try all of the above and get back to you. I'm begining to think the drive just died.
 
Well, I believe I have tried all the ideas I could come up with and all the ones you all came up. The conclusion is that the drive must be bad. I have swapped the IDE cables around, swaped the power supplies around, moved the jumpers, and tried different IDE sockets on the board. The drive isn't being seen in windows nor in the BIOS. I'm sure it is DEAD.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm off to buy a new drive. NewEgg here I come.
