if this is in the wrong area i am sorry was not sure what this would be listed as.

i wanted to know if anyone knew of a drive enclosures like this but with a power button that would kill all the drives connected to it? the reason why is a want to mulitboot my system but i want to keep a few drives from being read in one of the os that installed. ie would like windows to run fine with all the drives, hit a button when the pc is off and beable to boot it in say linux with the other drives off. does anyone understand what i am asking? just trying to make sure i am clear

When I was looking at 5x3 SATA hot swap bays, I found most of them included some sort of micro on/off switch. The same is true for the 4x3's. That was a feature I did not want, so I opted to go with the Super Micro bays (I believe they are better quality and have better cooling) so that I had functional fault lights.

I believe you're looking for something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121913

Here's a picture of my work in progress array using the Super Micro enclosure. I'm running RAID5, but it would just as easily run in JBOD:

why not just remove the drives that you don't want to be read? you don't even need to remove them all the way, 5 mm is more than enough to disengage the power/ sata connections. An alternative would be an eSATA enclosure with separate PSU.

Maybe something like this? All you'd have to do is push the button next to the HD to turn it on or off.

unixadm what case is that you have there? also thanks everyone for the help and input. i think i may just leave my server alone and just qual boot my labtop when i get it.

The case is a Coolermaster Stacker 832. It fits these drive bays perfectly, but I had reports that some of the other drive bays did not fit correctly. I removed the lower 4 disc hard drive cage and installed the lower most hot swap bay in it's place. Overall it's a very nice case and I like the flexibility of being able to mount my drives in whatever configuration I need.

ok kool thanks. i got a Coolermaster Stacker 810 myself and it looked a little like my case.
