Well, I've been using headphones a lot lately, a decent pair, KOSS R/70B, but they've started to break down, hearing a rattling while playing certain songs and such, and I was just wondering what are the top pairs of headphones out there? Price doesn't really matter, and no wireless. What pair do you think is the best?

Thanks

but for only 400 bucks, you can get a setup only MARGINALLY worse than that (aka, fucking badass)

The best thing you could do for wichever headphones you decide on getting is to talk to X86dude and have him build you a sweet PPA amp...I just got mine from him, and oh man, lemme tell ya.....my face melted just listening to the thing!

As far as actual headphones go, it's really individual wich are the "best"....some have better detail, articulation, punch, bass, soundstage, midrange purity, resolution, resonance, etc, etc..it all depends what you're looking for....If you don't mind letting the guy next to you hear what you're listening to, go with open headphones. My personal favorites (of those that I have tried) are the AKG K501 for classical/jazz/acoustic type music, and the Sennheiser HD600 for Rock/DnB/dance/electronic type music....both excellent choices.

Two words of advice:
-GET AN AMP
-contrast/compare headphones before you make any purchases

Or, you know, just get the Sennheiser Orpheus....

DT 770 non/pro

...that is if you're a freaking basshead like me.

Orpheus can't touch them for bass. In fact, I understand they actually have crappy bass response.

Oh Harkamus, you might be bass obsessed to try this before I do.... ever think of attaching a bass shaker to your favorite headphone listening chair? They can be found for under $30 each..... (:)eek: ))

dunno about that, there's a big gap between electrostatic and not electrostatic.

even a used k1000 with amp can get to be twice that

My Sennheiser HD-650's sound simply amazing when paired with a decent amp and sound card.

I'd wager that the Adire Parthenon motor can produce 5hz - so HA!

Google search it if you must. Let me just say that the linear peak to peak exursion capability there...is greater than anything I've ever seen

And someone recommends the Beyer dt770 non-pro ? Why the non-pro and not the pro version?

I'm considering some Beyers...in fact, right now in my amp/DAC/headphone decision...the headphone is the holdup - I can't find time to decide/audition. I just got on spring break today - so I have perhaps 9 days until Spring quarter...and then it's another 11 weeks of hell - I gotta get moving!

The difference between the pro and non pro is the clamping force. If you have a small head, it doesn't matter. If you have a large head, the pro can squeeze you pretty good.

The problem with the 770 is that the mids are really recessed, almost like there's a hole in the mids, so the bass and treble overpower everything.

Archmage, I'd look at the dt 880 if you want Beyers, much more natural sounding.

I'd go with the RS-1/Ear+ for my rock combo and I can't decide between the hd-650/Zu Mobius cable/Melos amp or the K1000(omg soundstage) for the other stuff.

Dt880's eh, I'll give them a look.

As for the other suggestions - I can only afford up the sr325 and hd600 for Grado/Senn - and then there's the cable for the Senn...so perhaps the hd580.

I'll be looking around for something priced 250-300...hopefully I can audition..

But then - that isn't the point of this thread...and as such I have made a separate thread (on Head-Fi) just for this.

I use Grado SR325 with my computer. If you are looking to get a pair.. I urge you to audition first for a while.. some people can't stand the grado clamps but I find it worth the sound quality.

uhh... that means to say that it produces 121db at 20hz - not that it can't go lower. 121db at 20hz is just the BENCHMARK there...what else can do that?

Bwahahaha...

You want me to really just look it up and find out the truth? I can't remember but I vaguely recall Dan Wiggins (Adire Guy) saying 7hz or 9hz is playable (perhaps he even said this was the resonant freq.!)...leading me to believe that with a large enough "cone" - this thing can 'produce' 5Hz quite well.

Hell...I remember even some normal woofers producing 5Hz (exceeding Xmax, and producing little or no SPL...but still measurable).

If you really want, I'll try to find the facts...I just don't care too much though.

Edit: ahah, I just read the link a bit more. It says 6Hz anechoic bass extension. So figure if you put a larger 'cone' - it might play 5Hz...who knows...I'm sure it can be tweaked for that.

Mmmmmmmmm. Are these out yet? I just might have to upgrade my Adires...I have their 15 inch woofers for my home theater set up. I have a pair of them. I believe they are called Scirrocos? Something like that.

I'm not sure I've heard of anything by that name, but I'm more familar with the actual drivers they make, not any prebuilt driver/box/amp assembly.

Starting with an "S" - they Have the Shiva (midlevel woofer, add a box/amp and they call it the RAVA). A bit newer, the Sadhara woofer.

Just to name a few others for Car/Home: Tempest, Tumult, Maelstrom, Brahma...

As for the Parthenon - I think it's still in development really. It was showcased at CES, along with a few other upcoming Adire products. They are making a 6" driver which supposed to be amazing, aligned T/S parameters with the Scanspeak 8545, and about 11.5mm Xmax... a 4" full range driver is in the works I believe.

That's about all I've heard.

Yeah, I just have the drivers. We made the enclosures ourselves.

Hmmm. I believe they are the Maelstroms or Tempest. I could find out...too lazy though.
