DRAM Frequency vs CPU Clock Speed

I have a ASRock dualSATA2 and an Opteron 165.

I am able to get it up to 2.56Ghz stable from a stock 1.80Ghz which is okay I guess.

Unfortunately I had to turn the Memory down to 100Mhz (200Mhz) in the BIOS. Now the CPU-Z DRAM Frequency shows the memory frequency at 142.5. Will this effect performance? I would prefer it closer to 200.

I guess my question is, is it better to have my processor speed at 2.30ish with my memory as close to 200Mhz as possible or is the 2.56 overclock more important for speed even though the 142.5 seems kind of low?

Thanks!

I would say higher clock speeds would be better, but 142mhz is pretty low. Does your board have any other multipliers?

Not really. The max multiplier for the Opteron is 9.

The odd thing is, if I raise the Memory to 133Mhz in the BIOS and lower the FSB to something that should eb handled easily, the computer wont post. This is odd because I know doing this wont overclock my ram past 200Mhz (DDR400). I assume it is in the 175ish range.

It sucks because I would rather work with 3:4 ratios in the BIOS but this 100, 133, 166 stuff confuses me slightly.

Whats your reasoning for 3:4?

Because I am somewhat new to this, and it was explained to be that way.
I guess I can assume 200Mhz = 1:1, and so on, correct?

Should I change NB and SB too 800Mhz?

Okay I seem to be stable now at 270 x 9 = 2.4Ghz and my ram is now at 173.6Mhz. This looks like my sweet spot.

I got this by lowering my NB and SB to 800Mhz and lossening Ram timings.

if your processor can handle more (which it should be able to easily), you could raise your fsb until your ram is at 200mhz. you might have to increase the voltage. You should be able to get that by leaving your NB and SB speeds at 1ghz, although you might have to increase the NB voltage. But whatever works for you, its different in every system :)
