Dragon Quest XII

Do we know that it's coming to PC this time? I would think that XI was a test case and the XI S PC release was just a lazy port of the Switch version that wasn't well received.

Zero data about it so far except "it's going to happen" but obviously the series is alive and well if this is anything to go by.

The series is a smash hit in Japan on levels that are hard to really comprehend. It's the most important IP of Square Enix, Final Fantasy is small fries compared to DQ.

It's a Japan centric game so who knows.

This is the only game I am interested from SE. . It is funny how huge of a FF fan I was for ages and disliked DQ games. Now it is flipped and I have a intense hatred for most things SE. Truth be told it really is not a SE game

I miss Squaresoft and the old DQ games. New ones aren't bad, just not the style of rpg I like.

Regarding both quotes... I haven't liked Squares RPGs went they went 3D with the Playstation. Their SNES era was golden and then things went to shit. The Enix side of games like DQ has held out and on longer.

Announced back in 2021, thought to be dead, but then re-introduced last year, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate approaches its final stages of development slowly but steadily. And if series creator Yuji Horii said that the team was "working hard" on the game earlier this year, it is just that, if with slightly nuanced words, here is what he told us the other day.

"Yes, indeed, I can't say anything, I apologise", Horii-san told Gamereactor at the 25th Comicon Napoli when asked for an update on the project, perhaps on characters, setting or its new combat system. "I am making it, putting lots of work into it", he insists in the video below. "I can only say that the next work will be great too, working really hard. Please look forward to it, is the only thing I can say".

Looking forward to it - I'm curious what caused the re-development. I remember reading that it was going to be a more 'mature' setting, so was a bit worried they were going to GoT-size the series like they did with FF XVI and my other concern being they'd move away from the turn based system (which I shouldn't be too concerned, DQ has been pretty good sticking to their gameplay roots).

Also, if anyone's interested in checking out the series, they're currently on sale on most gaming platforms (celebrating the series 40th anniversary).

I would not be surprised if they tried to make it a action right like XVI. They got some sense knocked into them from watching how XVI flopped and decided to correct course and go back to turn based. I can't wait til for DQ12.

Unlike Final Fantasy, which has tried a number of times to evolve (and I would argue totally lost the plot), Dragon Quest is what it is; you either like it or don't. It's certainly improved around the margins, but the core experience isn't that fundamentally different then it was 40 years ago.

That's why everyone got a bit nervous with the whole "mature setting" thing, since it's very much a departure from DQ's norm (even if you can argue V was quite dark overall).
