Dragon Age question

Dragon Age Origins. Don't even bother with the sequal. If someone tells you to get Dragon Age 2, they are not your friend.

Amazon might (probably?) have it on sale during their labor day sales; check daily. It is typically $5-$7 for the complete version (all dlc) and once in a while they toss in dragon age 2.

Origins. DA2 is a rushed piece of shit. Its not the worst game ever made but its soooo mediocre and boring that you want to claw your eyes out from sheer dissapointment. Even the art direction is boring after the beautiful-in-a-gritty-way Origins.

I had a lot of bad things to say about Mass Effect 3, yet it's still a much better game than DA2.

DA2 would have been better as a non-numbered side game. That way, the expectations wouldn't be so hight.

Aye. ME3 was also rushed mess but it felt good, real good until the last quarter kicked in. But DA2 overall, bleh. Good ideas here and there (like mostly dealing with politics, Witcher style) but its a repetive snore fest from beginning to end.

Agreed 100%. It would have worked as a good side game with the fat cutted and trimmed away.

Dragon Age Origins is, by far, the better game.

Dragon Age 2, while obviously rushed and not as good as the first, is not in any sense as bad as most will tell you (who are just disappointed it wasn't as good as the original). It's definitely not a bad game, I'd say a 7.5 out of 10. It would have been better marketed as a DLC.

Eh....

I sort of enjoyed DA2. Weird right? But here are things wrong with it.
Reused dungeons... litterally... there are like maybe 7 dungeons in the game, and it's used over the course of the game (and maybe not even that much).
Enemies pop out of no where. They didn't even bother to disguise in any real way. A knight or something will just drop down from space and fight you.
The story.... for one, it basically throws a small it's connected to how you play in there, then ignores it. A dead character in the first can reappear in the second. And secondly, the main character feels EXTREMELY unnecessary. It's like he's a passenger in the corner, that people notice and because he was taken along, people point to him as the guy they knew, because he was the only one in that corner or something.

Combat was kind of fun though, quick paced. It's probably the only reason I played through to the end.

I actually liked DA2, Fuck me right?

I didn't go in expecting Origins part 2 though, Just different gameplay in the same world. Its not a terrible game, mods can fix a few of the issues people had with character development and gear choices. It doesn't come close to DA:O (Ultimate, with all DLC) though. DA2 was a 20hr game for me, DAO was 100+

I would definitely rate it the same as what you rated it, 7.5/10.The comment above about the combat is what made me keep playing. I liked the way it felt, fast quick "arcadey." It was just fun at face value.

If I had to replay through either one, I would pick DA:O Ultimate with a few choice mods.

Da2 was the typical money grabbing hack job you see after EA takes over a good company.

Like I said earlier too, it should have been a side story, not a numbered sequal. That would have adjusted my expectations.

I liked DA2 I guess; but the reuse of tiny boring uninteresting dungeons was a big turn off. The climatic fights near the end were fun :)

I'll probalby play it again at some point in time but there are better games to buy/play. I highly recommend DKS; or even wizardry 8 (gog has it for $10). Hum. I wonder if DA3 will be any good (i'm playing dead space 3 now and that game is a PIA (much worse than DA2).

DA:O was by far the superior game. Dragon Age 2 had it's ups and downs and there were significantly more downs. Like the plus side was graphics and combat animations, the down side was the rest of the game... minus the arishok, that guy was a boss...

Origins is the superior game in multiple ways.

However, I don't think 2 is as horrible as people say, and here are my thoughts:

Pros:
It was very interesting to see a man's life story over the course of a few decades
General combat improvements were nice- combat felt faster paced

Cons:
reused maps are blatant and annoying
All the tactics you learned from Origins are useless due to bad combat spawning system
Ending is crap, no matter what you choose, because of bad writers

With that said, the story was told well enough that I did not regret playing through the game. There were enough good character moments for the main PC and the party members that I enjoyed their stories and liked adventuring together... everyone but Fenris, that is. He just sucks.

Origins is definitely better than 2, and Awakenings (the very-large DLC add-on) is also terrific.
2 had a few redeeming qualities like better animations, but the gameplay, dungeons, and plot are all well-documented dogs. It has long been theorized that the game was rushed to the point that it was borderline incomplete. The code apparently refers to tons of things that weren't in the game.

I was a bit upset with how much they simplified the combat in DA2. The animations were nice, and the pacing was nice but losing out on spell combos was seriously disappointing. That ,to me, was one of the most genius parts of DA:O.

There are still spell combos in DA2, but they're not nearly as deep. I really enjoyed the sped up combat of DA2, to an extent. My "perfect" combat would be DA2s style slowed down somewhat and a bit less "DragonBallZ" ish, merged with the depth and tactical nature of DA:O (no random spawning enemies, etc).

Seeing how Bioware took feedback from ME1-2 and merged it into 3 really has me hopeful. Yes, the ending was abysmal but that's more storytelling...the gameplay itself was damn near perfect.

That might also have been my issue, I ran double haste on nightmare... it was stupid easy.

The main issue with Dragon Age 2's combat was how they staggered the enemies randomly, throwing strategy out of the window. You were stuck kiting with your whole party because no matter how you arranged your party, enemies would appear from a puff of smoke and repel down on top of you.
The console versions of DA1 couldn't handle as many characters as the PC version, so they made everything appear from thin air in #2 so all of the games were the same.

Did you play EQ? Set your party up down the hall or a few rooms away and have 1 character "pull" spawners to your party. This makes 90% of the fights in DA2 trivial.

DA2 is CoD-fied version of DA. It's simple and easy run and mow down style.
If you are expecting anything of BG series, you'll be disappointed, but the game itself is not a total failure. It just did not meet the expectations.

If you can pick up DA2 in a sale, I'd say why not. It's not some D3 or simcity bad.

Did you try to see if you could buy it used at Game Stop? If not, I'd try Amazon because they're fairly good at keeping things at a low price. Would have to agree with Dragon Age 2...what on earth were they thinking? One huge disappointment.

Never did...but that's the issue. Enemies either spawn on top of you, or you use what amounts to an exploit to make the battles too easy. The first one didn't have that issue because they used the game real estate better. Plus, they didn't try to make all of the systems the same so the PC version could have 10-11 enemies onscreen at once, rather than have new enemies random spawn MMO-style.
