Dragon Age : Awakening announced

$40 will be just fine if there's $40 worth of content. No sense in complaining about the price before we really know the depth of the content.

IDK, it just seems expensive considering you can buy the entire game for that price or cheaper.

That's just it though. They're saying it's an "expansion". However, we don't know how much content there really is, so it's really kind of a moot point to go by. Even if we go by retail launch, DA was $50, so realistically, we're seeing a 20% price drop from that, so if we get even close to 80% of the content, we're getting another helluva value. Even then, if you wait from the expansion launch to whenever the length of time is from DA launch to now, you're going to see that drop in price in a likely similar fashion.

New origin story, 5 party members and a dragon opponent? Sounds yummy :) Seems like it's really full expansion not DLC. Someone only watched too much Matrix, as we have to face Architect :p

I'll take a $20-30 reasonably priced expansion over overpriced DLC.

Schweet ! Just finished my 3rd playthrough on Dragon Age. Next up Mass Effect 2 then this Expansion pack. :D

Dragon Age is the first game I've preordered and if the expansion has a similar amount of content or close to it, I'll probably be preordering it too. If I can put 65 hours into completeing a game and come away wishing there was more, it's a pretty good game.

the only thing that worries me is they are launching it on March 16, 2010

i hope this expansion won't be rushed, and i hope it's a finished product. Granted they could have been working on it during the DA:O production period and probably were, I'm just hoping it's not rushed.

my only other gripe is $40

no thanks, I'll wait for it to drop in price, $20-30 is more reasonable

1 new origin story and one new area to explore??

ONE NEW AREA??

i really hope there is more then just a few hours of play in this cause soldiers peak was depressing
i blew right through it .

im picking up the latest dlc soon. to give that a whirl and then ME2 as soon as it released

I wouldn't expect it on March 16.

They can't even release their DLC when they said they would.

"Return to Ostagar" was supposed to be released during the holiday season, then was delayed to Jan 5, and now is delayed again.

That's the problem with a linear SP game like this. Just how many times can you play through the same game without getting sick of it?

I guess before I really start complaining I'll need to know how long it really is. It's 4/5 the price of the whole game so I'm fully expecting something that offers 4/5 of the content. Any less really isn't good.

Expansion

$39.99

new stuff

Now let's complain about the price.

The price is brutal; but lets be objective, you'll get more out of this expansion than most stand alone games (L4D2, MW2, etc...)

For me it was 2 play throughs amounting to about 150 hours.

I am still slogging through my first play through. Probably by the time I finish DAO and then ME2 the expansion will probably already be at a discount.

you know, you're absolutely right, i'm going to wait for a steam sale or some kind of hot deal to get it

Man I haven’t even purchased/played the game yet, it’s on my list though. $40.00 does seem a bit steep for an expansion regardless of content, typical expansion are half the original price = $20-$30.. How many hours are being touted in Dragons Age? Then this should be at least 75% of that number for $40.00

I expect this to be the same as everything else I've ever purchased that comes from Bioware. I'll wish the price was less, but get more than my money's worth out of it. Dragon Age is the first Bioware game I waited for a sale on, and it's absolutely worth more to me than what I paid. This expansion will almost certainly be worth the asking price, given Bioware's record of expansion output.

I hope they bring in some game tweaks beyond just new content. Larger party please?

Yea, as in Ferelden was one area.

+1 I think they were pretty specific about how it would be an entire new country.

I'm going to get it (my reasons in this convenient bullet point list.):
- because I had fun with the first one and still want to play more
- It's BioWare

One thing to consider is that Bioware is responsible for the Throne of Bhaal expansion for Baldur's Gate 2. That was a MASSIVE expansion that was considered to be expensive at the time...but was worth every penny.

i'll buy it when it's lower in price, i don't think it'll stay full expansion price for long

hopefully there are deals on it

Well damn that kind of sucks for those of us that beat and uninstalled the game already! I think my characters got removed with the uninstall.

Is there an echo?

I'm going to buy it on release day. Actually I'm going to preorder it. You know what, I'll preorder it from Gamestop, Bestbuy, AND EA just to make sure. I'll pay extra! Anyone want to sell me their spot in line?!?

Any announcement on how they're going to handle this for console users? Will it install like Shivering Isles did for Oblivion?

Sign me up. I haven't even finished Origins yet but what the hell, bring on the expansion, lol.

It looks pretty good to me, though one screen shot I saw it looked like they had awakened the Sleeper. Folks in Skyshrine are fucked

Yea, as in Ferelden was one area.

Amaranthine, the new area, is not an entire country. It's a part of Ferelden, the part that is given to the Grey Wardens to rebuild their order in Ferelden at the end of DA:O.

You can actually see it on the map in the northeast. It's not as large as some of the other areas, like the Bannorn or Forstback Mountains or the Hinterlands or Brecilian Forest.

They could stuff many maps into a small area but it seems unlikely. I'd wager we'll just end up revisiting a lot of old areas with new maps stuffed in, afterall there's a lot of ground in Ferelden. Also I'm 100% sure that there'll be far more Deep Roads crap. The part we saw in DA:O started at the west end of Ferelden and headed even more west, while there is just as large a network going east.

Also, the Architect is the main villain of the book The Calling, which is supposed to be official canon (it was written by David Gaider, who is the lead writer for DA:O). There are some discrepancies though, particularly surrounding Alistair's birth, there's possible resolutions for it but it'd likely be convoluted.

Anyway, The Calling takes place mostly in The Deep Roads, particularly in the sections underneath Frostback Mountains, although between the two books King Maric and co. explore from Frostback Mountains all the way to Gwaren (way in the SE of Ferelden).

Edit: I come back bearing more bad news:

While for many, the value of an expansion like this is just the "15 extra hours", keep in mind that the actual cost of creating it goes way beyond that. Many of the new features in the expansion can likely affect the rest of the game so that means making sure new things interact with old things, and you know by now that there are a lot of old things. It means a lot of testing and a lot of code re-writing and content modifications.

IE. We made a shitty engine so we're spending all our time and money doing QA instead of content creation, and we're going to make YOU pay for it.

Not a particularly effective argument. Just because some guy takes two hours to make one burger on his first day at McDonald's doesn't mean I'm going to pay $20 for something I could get from any number of other fast food places for a tenth of that price. What happened to all that development time creating their engine to be mod/content creation friendly?

$40 is what a full on WoW expansion pack costs.. I'd expect to pay less for a simple single player RPG expansion

I would have went for $29.99 if I was bioware.

Well the $40 price tag is the estimate for the console versions. I'd guess that the PC version will be slightly less. Possibly $29.99 but I wouldn't put it past them to bump it up to $35 and give some bullshit reason of being more inline with the percentage difference from the full games.

If it was Activision we all know the price for the expansion would be $59.99. This is Bioware, so I am willing to bet it will be 29.99 for the PC version.
