Is it ok to constantly download stuff to my external drive?

I bought it to store extra data, and i heard that externals are suppose to be used to just store data and not be constantly accessed, is this true?

I also play videos from it a lot.

They're internal hard drives in external casing, you can still use them...

The only thing that I can think of that sets them apart is that external cases aren't always as good at removing heat versus...say a 120mm fan.

It might slow because it first has to download to temp on your primary drive then transfer over. I've noticed similiar speeds when extracting a file from a network drive to an ipod.
