I was thinking about buying this computer to use as download box. Keep all my stuff I really dont need on my gaming computer on it. Also use for webpages etc when playing MMORPGs.

What you think?

ANTEC Solution Series Mid Tower Case with 300W Power Supply, Model "SLK2600AMB" -RETAIL

Hard Drives
Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model

Memory (System Memory)
Crucial 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2100 - OEM

Motherboards - AMD
ASUS nForce 220-D Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A

Proc
AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 266 FSB, 256K Cache Processor - Retail

I have a cdrom laying around and was thinking for $365 thats not too bad. Question will a micro ATX MOBO like the one I listed work in a ATX case?

Thoughts/Opinions?

Looks like a nice little download/websurfing box. Personally, that would be over kill for me, but we will use it in different ways I'm sure. My download box is a 1.3 "gigapro" (800 mhZ via processor), with 384 mb RAM. I got in on the 5 dollar after rebate motherboard/CPU thing from TigerDirect, so this whold thing has only costed me about 50 bucks (I used some spare parts).

Anyway, I think you're fine, looks like a nice little box! ;)

Yea, that looks nice. From what you are saying, I don't think you are looking for server material. Just a side note: why are all your "little boxes" just as nice as my main rig?

nice setup there and that will last you for a couple of years compared to my PIII 1.0:D

I've never heard of anyone building a download computer (kazaa bitch)... usually they are spare parts from upgrading your main PC.

Whoa that's really overkill for a download box. 512 megs of memory? That is a lot for downloading stuff. The big hard drive is good, but you could halve everything else and still have a decent download computer.

yeah, that looks good to me too.

the only thing I would say is you HD looks a little small.

I managed to fill my 160GB and had to spend a few days burning everything to cd.

Check out OfficeMax for HD. Those guys are so desparate for business that their prices are dirt cheap.

I would consider using 2003 server on that box and setting up a quicky FTP server for accessing your stuff remotely.

Computer looks good a little excessive for a download computer, but another way to look at it is if you have a friend come over there is a extra computer to play on or if your goes down then you have a backup computer.

lot of bite for a file server/web box, I'm currently building one out of older parts to house all my HDD in.
850 PIII 512mb ram 4x60gb seagate drives, 1x40gb IBM, 1X15gb HDD for OS/programs.
I've used similar machines for the task and it works fine for my small network (your situation is quite similar)
I had the extra drives from a previous rig, I JUST got a 160gb seagate for the main rig.

newegg! still cheaper, better drives than thoes maxtor's they sell

not maxtors, WD with the 8MB cache

Don't take my word for it, take a look

i am not exactly sure on ur circumstance but i do think that you should just get another hard drive
this way you dont need to spend $300+ and you could easily access the Dl'ed files

get a new 250gb hd for cheap (wait for rebates to show up) and have that Hd as a download ONLY drive

Doesn't that cost an extra $400 at least? Seems like overkill... If you just want an FTP server on a download box, why not get a free ftp server program, or Linux?

Well I know we arent supposed to talk about warez but kinda hard to explain the use of it I have in mind. Like I hate having bittorents, mirc, etc running on main computer. Over the course of hours I eventually X them out etc or just get annoying to see them running. Also keep mp3's on it and was gonna get Netflix and start ripping a large amount of movies etc.

Not to mention keep any possible bad stuff I might run into off the main computer I game and do business with.

You don't need Server 2003 to run an FTP server... Just put XP on it and install apache or something...

I seriously doubt newegg sells drives for < $.50/GB AR.

as for the OS, use it as an excuse to learn Linux.

Well Newegg has a 160 gig for 113 free shipping. Circuit City did have some uber deal tho, 120 gig for 60 bucks. The only thing is that it takes like 3 months to get mail in rebates back so its semi lame.

I have that case but it is a step lower than that (SLK1600) but I have the same power supply. It isn't really the quietest case but it does its job. The system sounds about right for what you'll be doing. I don't think it is at all excessive. You might as well make it kind of powerful now so you won't have to be upgrading in a couple years.

good luck!

If it takes a more powerful system than that to be able to download stuff in a few years then I will be seriously pissed.

Well spinoff on old thread, I forgot we have a old AMD 500 mhz sitting aorund and thinking that would be alot cheaper, just get a hardrive for it.

Main question is didnt mobos that old have problems with our new huge hard drives of today. Was probably gonna get 160 gig one.

Thanks

Furthermore how long would it take to rip a DVD with a system like that? Like planned on making a cheapo dvd ripping download/storage computer

A mobo for that processor should be able to handle a large drive. It was just really old mobos (think more than 7 years ago) that would have troubles now.
It would take a fair while, cause transfer rates on those mobos were areound 33 Mbps peak, so it would take a fair while.

No, it's absolutely true that old motherboards will have problems addressing the entire capacity of large hard drives (in your case, drives over 137 GB). You should buy a new ATA-100 or -133 controller card, or a Serial ATA card. You'll need a card that supports 48-bit addressing to take full advantage of the available space.

What kind of connection do you think the guy has? It'd have to be one mighty fast connection to put any kind of strain at all on a computer like that.

Using my computer, which is roughly equal, to the one suggested in this thread, I tried downloading a few things. I used three instance of wget to download from the internet, for a total of 400KBs^1, and a simple copy paste to download from a computer on the network, for a grand total of 1.5MBs^1. During this downloading exercise, I had two word documents, three explorer windows, trillian, norton, task manager and performance monitor on. My cpu usaged peaked at around 20%, but the biggest cpu hogs tended to be the task manager and performance monitor; it averaged in the low single digits. My memory usage peaked at 200MB. Quite frankly, if I was making a dedicated downloading computer, I would be looking at something along the lines of 400Mhz k6-2 with 256mb of ram. You really don't need more.

Ogre67 - Greetings.

I'm the guy that merged your two threads on your download computer. Feel free to bump your thread, but one thread per topic, please.....

Thanks - B.B.S.

yeah, you guys are right. I kind of forgot that it would only be being used as a download computer. I guess I thought of it as more of a backup computer.

I say upgrade current machine and use parts to build downloading machine, since all you need is a fast connection and a decent HD.
