Down memory Lane : s939 Opterons

That wasnt just a socket 939 issue, extremely common in our dell GX270's (Intel). Dell was forced to warranty them a few extra years due to some class action lawsuit. Dells older and newer then the 270 didnt seem to have the issue.

I've heard that the bad cap plague from that time was due to some failed industrial espionage; one cap company attempted to steal another's electrolyte formula, but got caught and so was intentionally fed bad info.
 
My opty 144 @ 2.9ghz was pretty pimp in the day, so much faster than my old P4. Upgraded to a S939 X2 3800 and OC'd that one to just under 3ghz. I rocked that rig for several years then decided to upgrade (Phenom II X3 by that point). I got greedy, I saw people still getting good prices on the s939 dual core cpus so I pried it out of my old rig.. the heatsink had mated with the cpu for life and pulled the chip out of socket when I removed the sink. Broke 4 or 5 pins, enough to make it inoperable. Stuck the opty 144 back in, and that system is still rocking XP on 1.5gig of DDR ram... on loan to a wife's friend who needed a computer.
