Doubt in File Sharing on XP

Hi all.

I'm trying to set up a small home network with a Desktop PC running XP Pro and a Laptop running 98SE. I have everything configured and working fine except a weird (?) thing on XP.

I do not have any user or password whateverwhere configured (this pcs are just mine), I have file sharing enabled and drive D shared.

Whenever I tryed to access the laptop PC typing \\192.168.0.101 on Explorer Window (or \\192.168.0.101\D), it keeps me asking this:

I didn't define any damn Network Password and tryed all the default ones (admin, administrator, guest, etc) with no success.

With XP to 98 I have no problems and I cam Map the Network Drives easily.

Can anyone show me the light on this, please? :)

PS: On year 2000 I had more than 1000 posts, now my record was cleaned! :( I hope to get back on active again! :cool:
 
You need to set user name and password in xp for other pcs to access the drive. Just make up a user name and password.

You mean going to "User Accounts" and create an password for my account?

Will that force me to intruduce that password whenever i turn on my pc, correct?
 
Ok, I tryed already create a password on my user account. Rebooted the PC... and then try again \\192.168.0.101 (the Desktop PC with XP) from my laptop with 98SE and... same window as below asking me the damn Network Password.

Tryed also desabling the the IEEE 802,xx authentication ( :confused: ) on Connection properties... Changed the Name of the PC... evrything with no success....

What the Hell am I doing wrong???? :mad: :mad: :mad:

Please someone...........
 
Now I passed to the laptop and configure a password for my user... no success. I already made with Windows XP's Home Network Wizard a Setup Disk to run also on the laptop... no success................. always asking me for the $TJ#%%?» password...

I'm getting really pieced off with this.......................

Nobody has a clue???????? Please...
 
Which user are you loggin on with, on the Win98 computer?

(when you start the computer)


Create a user with the same name on the other computer.
No password.


Either that or turn on SIMPLE FILE SHARING.

(tools, folder options, view, use simple file sharing)
 
:eek: Yeah... the laptop has a different user from the desktop one... May that couse this?? :eek: If so, why does in windows xp i can see everything shared on the laptop without asking any password?

Tomorrow I'll create a new user on 98 (laptop) with the same name as I use in XP (desktop).

The option Simple File Sharing is already enabled.

Yeah I had two XP machines and I had to set my username on the other one and their username on mine, then it didn't prompt for pswd's anymore.hope it works for ya.
 
Ok.............. I did this:

Since the name of the user on the laptop is "MRVT"....... I went to User Accounts on XP and changed my actual name to the same "MRVT". Then I reboot the machine (just in case...) and......... logged in as MRVT........ went to my laptop and typed \\192.168.0.101 ....... And I've got... guess? The same screen asking for some password.

Than I defined a password to MRVT on the XP (I had any), logged in with the password, went to laptop and... asked the password and I typed the password defined on XP....... Invalida Password. Try Again! :mad: :(

So, I have the same name on both PCs, defned passwords, etc etc etc....... with no success.........................................

Why????????????????????? :rolleyes:

When you rename accounts in XP it really doesnt rename them.

The real account name is the same.

You just changed the front name.

Follow my previous post please. It has your much seeked answer.
 
The 98 machine is in a different domain, so the XP machine will not trust any security decisions it makes. He will need to make sure that the user "Anonymous Logon" and/or the "Guests" Group has both share, and if applicable, NTFS permissions for the data.

I'm not using a Domain based network, I'm only on the same Workgroup.

Ok, I'll do that! :) I was just trying to prevent having a startup screen asking which user I am... but if that is the only solution... than I'll do that!

Its not recomended but you can add an autologin for any account. Check out this MS Article
