Ok im thinking of using the -12v line on my PSU to double volt my fans i tested my fans with it on my work bench left em over night and they held up but im not sure if the mobo would handle the increase in amperage. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with doing this or knows exactly what the -12v line is used for on the mobo. i have few extra PSUs and motherboards well a whole stack of em kicking around that i could test with but before i go and fry a perfectly good PSU / Mobo i just wanted to get some more info. i might just mod an old AT PSU into the bottom of my case and use a relay to start it with the ATX PSU but my case is tight for space so im trying to avoid that.

The only reason I would do this is to use 24V fans. It's safer and cheaper to just buy better fans.
Double-volting means you're pushing the components at two times nominal and usually 7-10V higher than specified tolerances. That makes things run hotter, fail sooner, and potentially generate enough heat to catch fire.

Im not sure what your aim is... I am guessing you want the fan fo push more air? Most modern MOBOs don't use -12v so your MOBO won't care (unless cards plugged into your MOBO use -12v). Since the -12v output from most PSUs is limited to around 1amp you will not be able to power more than 6-7 fans from it.

It's actually pretty safe..

I know ppl who have ran 80mm and smaller fans @ 24v for 1yr + w/no issues.

i know why im doing it and how it works im just not sure if the mobo will accept the large increase in amperage on the -12v line and i want to double volt my fans upto 24v because i have a super dusty room where my pc is and i put filters on the fans which caused a dramatic decrease in air flow but now my components arnt covered in dust in about a week. so im double volting them to increase the airflow through the airfilters. and to be more specific im trying to run 4 .14 amp fans my psu will support that it supports .7 on the -12v but i have no clue of what the mobo will do with the large increase.

Why are you even pulling -12V through your motherboard? I would just connect directly to the wire coming from the power supply. Then you don't even have to worry about what your motherboard can handle.

Your MOBO won't care... most don't use -12V anyway.

i have a friend that did this, his has run without issue for a few months since. try it out see for yourself!!
