Ok so I have Qwest DSL with an Actiontec wireless modem/router. I also have the Linksys wrt54g router with dd-wrt firmware on it. I've just had it setup as a double NAT with the linksys behind the Actiontec router. I do have the linksys on the DMZ of the Actiontec to avoid double forwarding of ports.
Soooo...I know that there is a performance hit to have a double NAT, but I'm not sure how much of a hit it is. I play online games a lot and so latency is pretty important to me. So I have a few questions that I hoped you experts could help me out with...
1. How much of a performance hit is there going through a double NAT? Anything actually noticable?
2. I've read that I might be able to avoid the double NAT situation by setting my actiontec into a bridge mode and my linksys in a PPPoE mode? Would this work? As a side note, Qwest (at least my account anyways) uses PPPoA, if that changes anything.
3. Any other options I have to avoide the double NAT? (besides just not using my linksys router? I need the extra features I get from the wrt54g+dd-wrt)
4. Or should I not even be worried about the double NAT situation??
Thanks in advance!!
