Dothan on the desktop?

i searched over google but i never really got the answer i was looking for. Im pretty much sold for intel on my computer upgrade, but i did stumble across people putting dothan's in their desktop mobo's and such and o/c them to compete with high end cpus

i was wondering how is this done? what socket mobo's do they use? and how do o/ced dothan's compare to prescott?
 
vr-zone has a review up of an AOpen motherboard that does Socket 479.
COmpares quite well with OCd Prescotts, go read up on it ;)

i have a dothan desktop. it rocks. 2mb cache and pipeline structure REALLY makes a difference. my 1.7 screams past my old 3.0 P4 HT. i can't imagine how fast the 2.13 must be! a 2.13 dothan overclocked to 2.53 made the A64 FX55 eat dirt in a lot of benchmarks.

it seems to be, that when using ct-479, c-M (1M cache) is only a few % slower than pentium M at the same clockspeed. so, look for anandtech or some other pent M scores and compare'em with a64 :)
there have been some overclocks of celeron M at the xtremesystems.org forums but they have all been with older stepping celerons..

cel M 530J (1.3ghz) should be really sweet overclocker (low price, low multiplier - with ct-479, cpu has to boot at 201fsb to overcome fsb hole, new c0 stepping)

Sweet OC maybe, but what would the performance be?

Since its a celeron, wouldn't the performance be terrible?

No no no my good friend. When it comes to Celerons, the "Celeron M" is a completely different beast. Unlike the old northwood Celerons or even the newer Celeron D's, these things definately do not suck.

The main difference is L2 cache size, which on the 350,360,and 370 weighs in at a fairly hefty 1MB (older models have "only" 512KB, which doesn't hurt it nearly as much as you may think). For comparison, that's the same amount as the P4 5x0 series and Athlon64 FX series has. The other difference is the lack of Speed-Step which is mostly for power optimization (it's a mobile CPU after all). Though it does give you an unlocked multiplier downward to 6x.

x86-secret compared clock-per-clock perfomance dothan vs banias (as it has 1M cache, it's comparable to celeron M).

anandtech had some too, but they have like 1.8 dothan vs 1.6 banias.. so it's a little off..

but as we all know, cpu running at 100 (or 133) fsb and with single channel ddr266 (or ddr333) is very very very bandwidth-limited, so every bit of increased cache helps..
now give 'em dual-channel ram and clock fsb to 200.. and the cache-effect decreases..

so i'd say that c-m with 1M cache performs not more than 5% worse than pentium.
If they have similar conditions (dualchannel ram, fsb)

If Dothan was so bandwidth-limited, it would perform better with dual channel memory, right?

Apparently not.

Comparing identical Dothans under a single channel 855GME platform with a dual channel 865PE platform, the performance increase does not exceed 2-3% in any real-world benchmark discussed in the review. So apparently, the Pentium M design in its current state is not starved for memory bandwidth like many would like to think.

however - i've yet to see dothan 1M vs 2M ct-479 200fsb comparison...
 
Wow, fast reply. I'm not used to that here.

Yeah, I don't know. Right now, though, it's looking like the design isn't terribly dependent upon memory bandwidth. I think that the K8 design is roughly analogous to the P-M design, and based on its growth and development, I don't see a real dependence on memory bandwidth any time soon. Of course you understand that this is a rough estimation, I may be wrong.

Well I know my C-M 340 got a modest boost going to dual-channel DDR266 (default 100FSB). But I never bothered to actually calculate the % boost. could find out after I get back from work. Oh I do have a C-M 350 as well (1MB cache). Unfortunately it's an older B1 stepping. I'm curious how the newer 350J would overclock.
 
all i know is that im sold on dothan now, over at the xtreme systems forums so many ppl have crazy dothan o/cs, the highest one i saw being 3.1
 
I'm very satisfied with my Dothan at 2400 MHz, the systems is very powerful. I set up everyting inside an Antec Aria case and I fixed the case fan at 5v to reduce the noise.
The power consumption is very low so a common power supply is more than enough and the cooling system from Microcool is a whisper... now the less noiseless thing is the hard disk ;)

Yes... what you see is inside my Antec Aria case. These two NorthPole XE whisper are very silent and keep the system very cool even in overclock. I use this system for day use and not to play so I didn't add any agp vga card.
I have to say today it's stange to not hear any fan noise when you turn on your computer ;)
 
Eh, is that 2 Pentium M CPU's I see there?! :eek: How the hell did you do that? I didn't know Pentium M was SMP capable... :eek:

Edit: or maybe one is the Northbridge... if so that really saddens me as I got my hopes up for a while there... :(
 
Yes, on my Pentium M system, my chipset heatsink/fan is the same one as my CPU's. Same goes for the GPU, which was also designed for mobile use.

:) the second one is on the Northbridge, take in consideration the vga is inside the 855 chipset and it is quite hot, above all when you fit everything inside a sff case.
