Doom3 Crashes When I Hit Esc

Just installed D3. In game, when I hit the ESC key to access the menu, I get kicked out to the desktop, and D3 is shut down. What gives? Anyone else experience this?

Running XP home, 9800 pro - will be updating to 4.9 Cat beta to see if this helps.
