DooM III video questions

I have some questions for DooM II video card. I can obtain a 9800 pro 128mb, 9600XT 256mb, or 9800se power color. It seems that high quality in DooM III is for 256mb cards. Does that mean that only the memory is important for the compression settings, or is the card also a factor(does the game look better on high quality with 256mb aposed to 128mb while still remaining the same fps wise?). Also, if a 9800SE softmod doesn't work, does that mean the card is dead or will it work as a normal 9800se that is unable to softmod? and how much performance difference is there between a 9600xt and 9800 pro to justify the extra $

1. 256mb on a 9800 isnt going to do much, the GPU isnt fast enough to keep up with the memory, so on a 9600, its just worthless
2. the 9800 pro would be the best bet for non modded doom 3, since carmack said that overclocked and modded cards can fall to their knees in doom3
3. the se mod can fail, and it will not fry, it will simply only run as an se, which is slighly faster than a 9600xt, it has the same 4 pipes, but a 256bit mem bus, as compared to the 9600's 128
4. the jump from the 9600xt to the 9800 pro is fully worth the extra cash, you will see a big increase in perf. however, the 6800 vanilla would be a FAR better choice, if you have the cash

I've been playing Doom3 on high with my 9800pro 128Mb(with 2xAA also). It'll load for like a 1/2 second when I open some doors, but other than that it runs great. So go with that unless you can afford a 6800NU.

I disagree. 256MB on the card is going to perform better in Doom 3 than 128, a 5200 or 9000 I might would have agreed with, but a 9600?

Last I checked tho, the price difference wasn't that large. I'd go with the 9800 Pro myself...

lol.....you know what i was talking about..........but you never know. DooM II beat the shit out of my riva or tnt, whatever that old nvidia card was.

isn't the 9600xt core faster then the 9800pro core? it would have to be........so does that mean it keeps up with memory better, which isn't as fast as the 9800 pro memory(i think).

so what I need to know is do I get the 256mb 9600xt or the 9800pro, or 9800se? 9600xt 128mb are only.........130.............

how much do those 6800vanilla

i know this is off topic...but lithium..are you experience any cpu bottle-necking with your GT??? i have the exact same thing as you(XP3000+ 400fsb/a7n8x D/1024 kingston) only my cpu isnt OCed.....and im thinking bout buying a GT...

back on topic...i suggest the 6800nu too...itd be worth the extra money if you could get it...however if you cant the 9800pro while having less memory would most likely be faster supposing you have higher than 512mb of system ram....if you have less than that...the 256 might help a bit more in doom3...
