Doom Alpha is live.

Interesting I didnt preorder New Order but I think my key is a preorder key. thanks Ill see if I can join.

I hope single player is good. There are millions of multi-player shooters. Very few good single player shooters with a story longer than 3 hours.

This. I could give a rat's ass about multiplayer unless it's over a LAN with people I know.

As cool as it would be to try, I don't do preorders. Period.

To be fair the game released the 20th and keys were bundled with games until the 26th. Not really a preorder required thing this time. Different if you mean you don't do Day 1 (i.e. Full Price)

I played it at QC. I was not impressed.

Man I dont want to hear this. Doom (Playstation verion) literally changed my gaming life. Itll always be my all time favorite game (Final Doom to be exact). I even liked Doom 3. Ive got really high hopes for this one. I hope they dont drop the ball with it.

I thought it was a preorder only thing from the way it was worded. Perhaps I didn't get enough coffee this morning?

To set the record straight, 10-15 years ago I would have done day 1 purchases (and I have for stuff like Resident Evil and FFVIII (PlayStation), Quake II, Doom 3, Silent Hill 3 on PS2, etc.) or even go so far as to set aside $10 at Babbages for a reservation, but I will do neither preorder (paying full price before the game has even gone gold) or day 1 in this day and age. Fuck. That.

The publishers cashed out all their goodwill chips with me a long time ago with their crap.

I loved the colored lighting, new sound effects, and ambient soundtrack in the PlayStation version, but I frowned upon the sparse level layouts ala the 32X or Jaguar versions. Still the best port of the lot aside from the Japanese Saturn version. And D3 is awesome. Made me very happy I invested in a GeForce FX 5900U before the game released.

This one is more of a "Arcade Style" Shooter experience than a survival horror unfortunately.

I'd say the MP is more like a Quake III style game with a Doom branding.

I have been fond of the entire Doom series, but this game worries me. The entire super soldier thing has been done to death. If this game sucks, I will be upset. I still remember the old days of dialing up with my buddies with my US Robotics 14.4 baud modem to play coop.

The artificial attempt to create "fast gameplay" I think will ruin this game for classic Doom fans.

And could you elaborate some?

Well one thing that immediately put me off to it is that the FoV is god awful. Like to the point that it caused discomfort. I would hope that the FoV can be changed in the PC release, but that marred the whole experience for me.

Beyond that, I think it just felt like an adequate arena/tournament shooter, and not some amazing, AAA, franchise reinvigorating, hype-beast that it sometimes seems made out to be.

Maybe the singleplayer is better.

The other big problem is the mechanics seemed outdated. Health pickups seems so, lame now.

The core mechanics are intentionally shallow to evoke those feelings of nostalgia and loyalty to the arcade arena/tourney shooter genre.

But you don't need a AAA studio and budget to make a game like that - anybody can do it, and I think they realized that it wouldn't fly to make that simple of a game and try and hawk it for $60 like they no doubt will. So they tacked on a bunch of extra "features" like turning into a monster and melee finishing moves to make it a little more complex. To me these things ended up just feeling like gimmicks.

The finishing moves, for one, I would want to have some option to disable or skip the animation. As short as they are they still interrupt game play and can get a bit repetitive.

I would spend $60 on a doom game that doesn't have those stupid gimmicks in it.

I agree. I prefer hiding behind a box while my traumatic headwound heals in seconds.
Is it any better than picking up a magical salve that instantly heals it, instead? I know you were being sarcastic, but I wanted to point this out anyway. Game mechanics are absurd because real life would be limiting and boring. But as far as representing character health and healing I much prefer the latter.

I prefer ammo boxes over sit-and-wait. Save/Rest points away from enemies are probably my favourite though - mimics real life while not being difficult at all to implement in most games. In Doom it could simply be a room you can lock and take a time-lapse nap in. Of course this wouldn't work in multi-player, which may explain why they don't do it...

There are a TON of indie doom/quake/UT-esque arena shooters that are in the Free to $15 range.

Reflex (http://store.steampowered.com/app/328070/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_1) particularly comes to mind.

With the game making tools that are available today, if they have the media assets, a small experienced team can get something playable together in less than a week.

i was at quakecon and was watching people play. i didnt even bother to play because it just didnt look that good. Its just tdm on another engine, didnt really look all that fast or fun to me.

I loved the original on PC, and I really enjoyed Doom 3. The Absolute HD mod improves the graphics considerably and tweaks the game mechanics as well. I hope they can come through with Doom 4, sadly peoples expectations will likely exceed what is delivered.

I remember posting my code in a long time ago on the Wolfenstein page. Should I re-do it?

I'd rather have fast gameplay and strategic map resources.

I know I entered the code originally into PSN but do they need me to do so again, just through the specified website? Seems a bit confusing.

Just signed up for it.

I'm glad they have medkits that you have to pick up. That made for some great gaming memories when I cleared the level with only 1 or 2 percent health left. Just my two cents.

i watched Nauseous at quakecon while he watched doom.

because i'm creepy as fuck.

hi B :D

I reg'd for this alpha access last year when I got Wolfenstein TNO .... I guess I just wait and see.

I think it's funny when people complain about it going to older mechanics. When Doom 3 came out, everyone complained that it went to newer mechanics. Some people just aren't into id games, and that's totally fine, but complaining that they aren't like other games is just... dumb I guess? If they stray too far, then they cease being what they've always been, and that wouldn't be good IMO. I say this all the time, but if you don't want an id game, don't play an id game. Anyone that typically enjoys their games will probably like this one too I would think. I personally wanted an evolution on Doom 3 more than the older ones, but I can't even pretend that I'm not totally excited and going to have a metric-fuck-ton of fun playing it. They really can't get in in my hands fast enough. I wish I had picked up Wofenstein a month earlier than I did. I'd love to try the Alpha.
