I want to play doom 3.. I currently have a geforce 4 mx440 video card.. the doom 3 support stuff says that I can play with the card.. I tried.. It runs like crap. anyone know the cheapest card that I can play the game with, even on low graphics settings.. I just want to be able to play smooth.

The rest of my setup: Athlon XP 2100+, 512 megs PC2700 memory.

damn....I'd say the MINIMUM card you'd want to play doom on is a GF4Ti4200.
My friend has a ti4600 and can only play at 800x600 MQ and the rest of his system is a 3.0c, 1gb ram (he doesn't overclock...why I'll never know...he's just wierd like that).

I have the system in my sig and can play at 1024x768 HQ.

an nvidia card will play D3 better than an ATI card (same card class...none of this, my 9800xt plays better than a fx5700 crap).

You can pick those cards up fairly cheap nowdays...check in the FS/FT forums...I've seen a couple 9600xt's for around $100. I think there's a 9700pro in there for $125 too...which would be a better deal than a 9600xt.

ATI 9200 1 or Nvidia FX5200 ~$60
would probably do like 640x480 on low
but its going to be iffy

ATI 9600pro or Nvidia 5700 ~$100-150
would be a much safer bet

ATI 9800pro ~$200

more you spend the better youll get basically

btw prices are rough Im feeling a tad lazy to go check

err, something I forgot to mention: I kinda want to stick with nvidia. I use linux as well as windows, and the ATI support sucks in linux. a friend of mine has a 9800pro and in linux he can barely run warcraft3, where me with my mx440 runs it perfectly smooth.. so yeah, I'm thinkign that I want to stick with nvidia.

you may be able to find a 5900xt for around that price if you're persistent in looking. otherwise, I'd say a 5700 series would be your best bet.

what about something like a 5600XT? (I'm browsing video cards right now, they're a lot cheaper and don't look too shabby.)

The only nvidia XT card to get is the 5900xt. Don't bother with anything 5600. they are all crap. the 5700 is much better than it, and the 5900xt kills the best 5700. The 5600xt is crap plain and simple.

wait a little longer and get a 6600 agp vanilla for 150 it will smoke the ones that have been suggested and the gt will be even stronger at 200. They will be around in late fall from what i hear.

I have a ti4200 64mb overclocked (see sig) and I play d3 at 800x600 MQ (playable at HQ, but at times jaggedy), 1gb ram, 2.15ghz...I would have thought your friend would be able to play a bit better than me...

lol...he probably doesn't tweak his system like we do. He's the sort that if it plays after it installs...that's good enough for him. He's not to particular on the resolution or eye candy. Kinda strange IMO...but hey...to each their own....

Hell, he won't even overclock...despite the fact that he's seen my system (which started as the same specs as his only I have 512mb ram instead of 1gb) at 3.6Ghz runnin' through D3 at 1024x768 HQ...he still won't overclock....blows my mind....

Not overclocking isn't that mind blowing.

It is when he says "wow, that's cool. I wish my system was that fast."...yet he still doesn't do anything about it.

our dinky AMD chips are a bit tougher? lol

same system, but only 256MB... smooth as butter @ 8x6 MQ, I usually run LQ as I don't have enough RAM, but when it isn't reading from the drive it stays a steady 45/60fps.
