Doom 3 - System Analysis

I recently purchased Doom 3 and bought a BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC card at the same time. After making through the install and configuring what I thought would be easy for my system, I had pretty slow frame rates in the game (About 18-24). I just got a new job and will be building a new system in about 3 months, but until then I want to have some fun with this game. I thought about replacing the 1800 with a 2400, and adding another 512MB of RAM. Would a HD with 10KRPM and 8MB Cache make any difference? Also this OS install is closing in on a year old and I have had numerous battles with spyware and viruses, I'm thinking of formatting and reloading the entire thing. Any thoughts?

Doom 3 Settings:

Medium Quality; 1280x1024; 4xAA; Full Screen

My System:

Windows XP; DX9b; SP1
300Watt Power Supply (Generic)
MSI KT3 Ultra
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Corsair 512MB PC2100
BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC 256MB (Stock OC)
Maxtor 120GB HDD 7200 RPM 2MB Cache
SB Audigy HD (Value Card from Best Buy)
Pioneer 8x8 DVD/RW

Wow I am going to say that you Ram is the biggest bottleneck right now, followed by your cpu.

Get a nice stick 512MB stick of pc3200 and you should be good to play at medium settings. If you can afford it also get a new cpu. A nice mobile 2500+ will be good and its cheap.

How the hell is PC3200 going to make a difference when an 1800+ is a 266FSB part? I'm not familiar with the board, but I doubt it would take an Athlon XP mobile, and if it does, I doubt it will do very high FSB's. What you really need is a complete system overhaul; new cpu (a64), new mobo, and new ram.

Liam, how are your benchmarks? As I stated in my original post, I am going to be building a new system in aboout 3 months. I am just looking for some input to see if it would be worth increasing any component on my current system or just a waste of money. I can play D3 without any hangups or jitters, but i'm always striding to obtain the best balance of performance/quality and I don't feel I am there yet. Obviously, I can't obtain the best P/Q from this current system but if you were spending $100 what would you do to improve what I have?

save your $100 and use it when you are ready to upgrade your whole system. There isn't much you can do to increase the performance of your current system. Right now, the whole thing is a bottleneck for your new video card.

Agreed. You don't need a new hard drive though, it has no effect on framerate.

You will need a new motherboard, proc, and faster ram to match, after that, you can start enjoying your new video card ;)

I play Doom3 at high quality @ 1280*1024 (AA off) at 40+ FPS

and i have a crappy video card

I think there is somethign wrong with your setup as it should perform much much better.

Damn dude calm down. :D I was just stating that he needs faster ram because it can always be used when he get a new MB ;) . But I did not see that his MB only supports up to 166FSB so that my mistake. So you are right he does needs a complete overhaul.

Well you asked for my benchmarks, and I can tell you i get 17k 3dmark01 and about 6k 3dmark03.
YoUnAn, sorry for getting worked up over nothing lol

The 5950 is crappy? Agreed that last generation of NVidia cards got owned by ATI but that card is far from craptacular. Plus you have a 3.2E, of course you can full everything and have playable framerates...

his box is crippled by that 1800 Thunderbird on an older MB with the pc2100 mem.

I'd also say that if you upgrade anything else you must get a new PSU... I'm suprised that 300W generic is still working well with what you have currently.

Ease up, sometimes generic PSUs are pretty good. I've got one in my system, and its stable as, even OC'ed to the max. If it works, its good.

Wow, this forum gets results fast, i'm gonna start hanging here...

Anyway, after reviewing the posts and thoughts from others I have decided that I am not going to waste any more money on this system. Once it gets retired, its only gonna run as my Linux desktop machine for web browsing and email (The 6800 is going to the new box ;) )

As far as right now, I am going to wipe the drive, dual boot with Linux and Xp, setup my windows to be tweaked out for gaming and use Linux for web browsing, email, word processing, so that the OS won't get cluttered with items that could cause adverse effects. I'll post back with the results. I know there are a ton of docs related to performance this and performance that.

Thanks again for the input..
