I can't get surround sound for Doom 3, it keeps telling me to check my control panel settings.
I have a creative audigy 2 soundcard, and 6.1 speakers.
Everything's set up fine, and it works for every other game.
This game NEEDS SURROUND SOUND! Why won't it work!!
I downloaded the latest creative patches, still nothen.
Argh :(

Headphones are 10000x scarier than surround sound...trust me. If your headphones are decent...

go to control panel/sounds and audio devices

next to the speakers click advanced, select 5.1 speakers on that menu.

hope that helps.

I played most of the game using my 5.1 equipment and last night finished the game using my wife's Sennheiser studio headphones, wow....even though the studio headphones flatten out the sounds a bit, it was still an even more terrifying way of playing.

I have the same surround sound problem with an audigy 2. My drivers are updated and I have 5.1 selected in control panel and audiohq

make sure that not only in the creative mixer application but also windows speaker applciation you have it set to 5.1...

also, headphones sound like crap in doom 3. you get no virtual center or rears since they're doing software mixing :-/

I'm running an Audigy 2 ZS with Zalman 5.1 headphones. Every sound is right where it needs to be, in Doom and other games. Hell, Ive been kicked because I was tracking someone through a wall when all I was doing was listening to their footsteps. I can damn near play with my eyes closed because the sounds are so perfectly placed.

Setting it to 5.1 disables my rear centre speaker... I bought 6.1 for a reason

*updated*
i tried 5.1, it allows me to use surround sound, and it does work.
Here's the catch, the sound cuts out ALL the time, the only way I can get it to work again, is if I disable the surround sound, then enable it again in Doom 3.
Another problem, I enabled Vertical Sync, and now my resolution keeps resetting to 640 x 480 as default, and my anti aliasing resets to off.
I need to change these settings every time I load up doom 3.
Wow!

What are you talking about, dude. I get great surround effect on my 'phones.

It may be the fact that in order to get surround effect, audio clarity is MUCH more important with headphones. Surround with 'phones (or two speakers for that matter) relies on modification of the sound stream. Sounds coming from other than straight forward are modified slightly to mimick the natural distortion created by the unique shape of your ear. I mean, how did you think your brain could perceive 3-Dimensional sound with only two mic's? :p

Since that slight modification is so important you'll lose the effect on crappy headphones. With 4.1+ speakers, however, the software simply sends the sounds down different channels. Speaker quality is irrevelent.

That being said, I listen with a Total BitHead and Sennheiser HD580's and I can point to the location of any enemy or flickering light with my eyes closed. :D

Not saying you have to pay what I did, though.

There's a number of speakers setting in the config file. I've got 5.1, and it's set to 6. You guys with 4.1, 6.1, and 7.1 setups might try 5, 7, and 8 respectively. Who knows, it might work correctly.

yes, i understand this. but the problem is that doom 3 does NOT support 6 or 7.1. period.

i can't get 4.1 to work with doom3 either. its selected in soundstorm nvmixer app, and in the regular windows app. but i throw a grenade behind me and the explosion aint behind me. argh

Wow!

This is a known problem with doom3 right now. It seems to be happening a lot on creative cards with surround.

has ANYONE gotten at least 4.1 to work? there is no option in doom3.

edit: oh well, if i can mirror the back speakers for the fronts, thats surround enough for me i guess. now i just gotta figure that out

DOOM 3 decodes 5.1 separate channels (or 6 channels, technically).

However, if you have 4.1, 6.1, or 7.1 setups, shouldn't selecting those optisn in your audio properties work?

Also, don't worry about "losing your rear surround," b/c, the back surrounds will matrix out the sounds directly behind you, ESPECIALLY if you use the Creative Speaker Calibrator.

Actually, having a matrixed back channel is better than a true back channel, b/c sounds that emanate from directly behind you can get confused by the brain as coming from the front.

In fact, you ears can detect better positioning in front of you than in the back, so having 4 speakers behind you (as in a 7.1 config) is overkill. We would be better served by having about 7 speakers just up front at varying heights, with fewer behind us, but that's for a future DVD standard... sigh

Um... yeah...
So my sound cuts out no matter what if I do surround sound for doom 3.
