Doom 3 Snow, HELP

Ok I have heard multiple stories, and even an article online about this however none of them answered the question WHY. Me, and 2 of my friends have had a problem in Doom 3 about artifacting, little white/red dots that has a resemblance to snow. I dont think this problem is heat releated since it only happens in Doom 3 (Also with my new video card it is doing it in the New ATi CCC), and the card is at normal temperatures ~64C-66C idle and ~72C load for me. Two of us have 9800XTs, me with an AMD 64 FX and him with a 2.4 P4 @ 3.2. The other person has a stock 3.2 P4 with AIW 9800.

I made a reference to my new video card earlyer, because I recently recieved this one from ATi after a 7 day wait from RMAing my old 9800XT. When I played Doom 3 on the old one, it would be filled with white dots, and I dont know why. It went from only Doom 3 causing problems to escalating to desktop corruption (words scrammbled, parts of pictures missing) ... however not sure if the two are related can only assume, and games you couldnt even see what was happening after a week. So I made a call to ATi, and they tried multiple things before concluding that the RAM on the card is defective, and to RMA it. Now, I am scared to even load Doom III, but with the new card I noticed ever so often dots on the grass in the Catalyst Control Center in the car video.

Since this is happening in all my friends 9800 series, however the people using the 9600 that I have talked to are fine. Is there a flaw in the cards causing this problem? I am really quite confused on why this is happening!

Also, After hours of surfing the web looking for answers I found atleast 50 people complaining of the same problem, but nothing gave any working solution. All the cards with the problem are the 9800 series. Typical solutions that dont work are : Drivers, Stop overclocking (Most people have it at stock), BIOS settings, reformatting, turn off overdrive etc.. The only working solution is to UNDERclock the card below stock speed, and this is only a "bandaid" fix because when you go back it will start doing it again, and I dont appreciate losing the speed that I pay for. Can anyone explain why this is happening???

I have posted this on other forums trying to get answers, and no one seems to even have a clue, and does anyone know if ATi is aware of this issue and working on a fix? Please HELP

Sry I don't have a fix for you. However, I had the same problem w/ my old oc'd 9800pro. Returning it to stock speeds fixed it however. I have pretty good airflow in my case. How are your case temps? Also, try taking the side off and putting a big room fan right by it. If it's stops it's definantly a heat related problem. Hope that helps.

Right now my CPU is 43C, MB 29C, and Card 67C /w overdrive on right now. However, I turn off overdrive when I run Doom III for all you who are about to say to turn it off. I just find it odd that with 3 different cases, and 3 different CPU's the turn out is the same...

It is a heat issue.

I get the exact same thing as you described on my 5900nu when I have it OCed too much. When I turn the OC down, or, put more direct cooling into my case (AC window unit), the speckled snow goes away completely.

I've heard some Radeon card users have had to "underclock" their cards because they can't handle D3 at their defaults. You may have to do that also, but I'd suggest trying what v1p3r-386- said about using a fan.

Yeah use a fan on your open case, and report back. Yeah it is weird that it's 3 different people but maybe you all have hot rooms or poor case temps? Btw, since you have an asus motherboard, I'm assuming your using asus probe for temps. Asus probe doesn't tell you case temps. Download motherboard monitor 5 (just google it) and report back with case temps. Hope you can work out your problem!

Should the fan pull in cool air or out hot air?

Il try that

I installed the MBM 5 and it reports the same case/CPU temps as my Mobo temp on ASUS probe...

MBM 5:

Case: 30
CPU: 43

ASUS Probe:

MB Temp: 30
CPU: 43

I have a 9800 pro, same problem. I usually run the core at 455 for everything, except Doom3. I had to knock it down to 430 to get rid of the snow. Stock heatsink, shin-etsu for thermal paste.

Have u tried the 1.05 Doom 3 beta patch yet?

No.. Is it supposed to fix the problem?

Mine isnt overclocked, and I dont really want to underclock because then why even have a 9800XT if I have to turn the clocks down?

EDIT: I just put a fan instead of the side of my case blowing cool air in. My processor is to 38C and still dropping, MB=26C and dropping, Video card= 60C and dropping

That is down from 43C, 30C, and 66C...

Well i dont have Doom 3 but the descrition of the 1.05 beta patch says it fixes rendering problems, stability problems, blah blah blah etc.

ATItool found my max oc on my 9800Pro to be 450/380. I haven't tested since I flashed to the XT bios. I was getting snow in Doom3 at this speed, so I dropped down to 445/380. Runs like a top now, without the flurries. I love water. :)

With the fan do you still get the artifacts in doom?

I will have to try it tommorrow... My friend has my Doom III CD since it wasnt working for me. Ill report back then. However, I did benchmark/overclock some with it, and wow! Broke 23k and 7k in the 3DMarks up from 22061 and 6886. Put the CPU up to 2.4Ghz and card up to 452/378. Ill put them back to stock and report on Doom III tomm though.
