Hi guys

I recently upgraded my video card from an Ati Radeon 9800 pro to a Bfg 6800 Ultra o/c and while seeing how various games performed, I was able to set Doom 3 up to ultra high settings (rest of system being in my sig) and it looked better than I had ever imagined - I only played through the introductory beginning and didn't get to any shooting or killing but I was wondering if this was a fluke and if it would bog down when the action started or if this is the norm for a video card of this type?

What were your settings for the 9800?
it shouldn't look any different(besides slight filterting differences), it just should play alot better.
And btw, change it to HQ mode, then ultra mode- there isn't much(if at all) difference.
The difference is that the game might have some hitching going on, depending on how your doom 3 is tweaked, and how much ram you have.

Settings were on medium before and I was just surprised at the change - but that might also be because I switched from LCD to CRT.

I switched to lcd and everything got a lot darker and didnt look as good. Meanwhile my desktop looked better than ever. Must be the monitor. I have heard that your computer will on detect at ultra settings if you have 512mb of memory on the vid card. Of course no one has that yet.

There are only minimal visual differences between ultra and high quality. The difference is that when I played at 1600x1200 on my 6800 Ultra, the high quality used 800Mb RAM, whilst Ultra used 1.1Gb. The extra textures must be handled by the main RAM as the 256Mb of the graphics card can't hold them all. This may cause some stuttering when moving from one area to another. I played the game through at 1600x1200 high and was happy with it.

You might also like to try 1024x768 with vsync ON and see if you prefer the added smoothness.

I'm playing on a 6800GT with an LCD that's a native 1280X1024. I keep all the details cranked all the way and have no issues. Run the timedemo1 twice and see what kind of numbers you pull as it's not a terrible guage either.

Funny enough I *HATE* playing with vsync off (tearing irks me to no end), but for some reason Doom doesn't tear at all for me. Play around with it on your rig, but I don't ever see any so I keep it off in Doom as it's about a 10-15 fps boost. Doom is literally the only game that works like this for me, though.

If you enable the fps display you can see that the fps CAN go above 60 fps even 70 fps, but the cap drops it down under 60 when that happens.

When I played the game with the counter on I would see 60-65-72-60-55-65-60-72 ect.

I have a few screenshots that have something like 72 fps in the corner.

It won't bog down. If you're even asking this question it's obvious you don't know what you have. I think some people misread your post a bit. It won't bog down, even on Ultra Quality @ 1600 (Provided your CPU can back it up).

Playing between Ultra and HQ makes absolutely no visual difference (that you notice while playing), so it's kind of pointless. I timedemo Ultra @ 61 FPS and HQ @ 65 FPS.
