i just got my ati radeon 9800 pro 256 bit 128 meg
and played doom iii for the first time.

the problem is when i move my head there is a subtle horozontal line of flickering that cycles up and down the screen.
this occurs despite having 60 frames at the time. this error occurs on all resolutions and image qualitys.
i reset my moniter refresh rate to 85 hrtz.
i dled the current catalyist drivers as well.

what else can i try?

thanks!

i get the same problem with my 6800GT and i enabled v-sync and it fixed that. and with your monitor running at 85hz you wont lose any fps either.

Sounds like Vsync is the issue. Some people can live with the 'tearing' that occurs when it is off, but I prefer it on myself. It just feels smoother.

i like to turn vsync to 'always on' in the ati control panel, for opengl and direct3d. this way you can keep it off in the game for an fps boost and not see the tearing.

You realize that makes no sense.

turn vsync to always off in cards settings, off in game = tearing
turn vsync to always off in card settings, on in game = maybe no tearing, maybe slight fps loss
turn vsync to always on in card settings, on in game = no tearing, slight fps loss

turn vsync to always on in card settings, off in game = no tearing, no fps loss**********

thats how it works for me. whatever.

Thanks, I wrote it. ;)

V-sync is always preferable, but it's optimal with triple buffering (and since D3 is OGL, you can force it via ATI's CP). A refresh rate fix is always nice, although it can be detrimental to performance w/o TB.
