My problem is that basically reguardless of the resolution 1024x768 or higher I get almost identical frame rates between them. @ 1024x768 The frames drop in to the low 20s when I get more than 2 monsters on the screen in a decent sized room. Am I being limited by my CPU or is there some other issue going on here?

All drivers are up to date, using directx 9.0c and windows xp pro (no service pack 2 yet)

PLEASE offer some insight.

Here's the rundown of my setup:
Athlon XP 2400+
1 GB Dual Channel DDR (2 512 chips)
SATA Hard Drive
ABIT NF7-S Motherboard
XFX 6800 GT

please run timedemo at different resolutions.

alt + ctrl + ~

timedemo demo1

run 3 times at each resolution and take average of last 2

@ 1024x768 i get 47fps and 49fps drops a couple of frames as you go up the resolution ladder.

At first glance, I'm tempted to say your CPU is holding you back.... as I just mentioned in another thread, the Athlon's RELATIVELY small cache size limits performance for a game that is probably the most demanding game ever made in terms of utilizing a CPU's cache.

What do you think the minimum processor upgrade would be for me to get out of this rut? It's a bit frustrating to have a 400 dollar video card running a game at 45fps..

One of the bigger signs that I'm getting is that when i'm in a small room, fps is great, stays at 60 no prob. But if I get in a large room, fps easily drops to 30 fps. Big room + a couple monsters = low 20s.

Is the 2400+ a Thorton or Thoroughbred? Running at stock speeds?

Running at stock speeds yes. And i'm not sure about which core it is. I want to say its the lesser of the two.

How fast is your ram? If you have 3200 I would go for a XP-mobile and overclock to 2400 - 2500 mhz. If you go to XP-64 you will need new mobo as well.

Your problem makes sense as a CPU limitation, given that monsters on screen involve lots of CPU action calculating the AI and any number of variables. Minimum upgrade? I suppose moving to the highest speed XP (with a Barton core) would probably be the cheapest viable solution. I think I would suggest going with an Athlon 64 (939) in the lowest speed possible and bundle that with either an Abit, MSI, or ASUS board.

How much is a decent 939 cpu/motherboard combo going to cost me? If its a lot, i'll probably just end up buying a 3000 XP.

I'm actually looking at newegg right now and thinking about getting the AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - Retail For about 175 or 180 + a compatible motherboard for about 80 bucks or so, is this a good deal?
