I am looking for some help as to why I dont get the expected frame rates in most games with my system (see below). Most noticeably Doom 3. See this link for the details
HTML:
http://www2.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA5MDc4NzE0M1RPNjJBTU9FV1hfMTZfM19sLmdpZg==

My frame rate results with the included timedemo demo1 are below:

1024 x 768 - 60 FPS (average second run)
1280 x 1024 - 42 FPS (average second run)
1600 x 1200 - 31 FPS (average second run)

The expected frame rate results (assuming that my graphics card is similiar to a 6800GT which I have seen from some reviews or assuming that Quake 4 is similar to Doom 3 see this article
HTML:
http://www.behardware.com/articles/663-6/agp-graphic-cards-in-2007.html
) are

1024 x 768 - 80 FPS (stats for my card in Quake 4)
1280 x 1024 - 59 FPS (stats for my card in Quake 4)
1600 x 1200 - 57 FPS (stats for the 6800 GT card in the HardOCP link)

My system:

Athlon 64 3500+
1GB DDR400 Ram (512MB Kingston and 512MB Hynix)
XFX GeForce 7600 GS 256MB (not overclocked, 2 days old with 93.71 drivers)
A Gigabyte Socket 939 Motherboard (cant remember name)
40GB Western Digital 7,200 rpm HDD master and 200GB Western Digital 7,200 rpm HDD slave.

Anybody know what my problem could be? Please I really need to know if its the card so I can get it replaced

Note: All tests have Anti Aliasing turned off

eh, those numbers look about right to me with the system in question. i don't think a 7600gs will perform as well as a 6800gt.

Go here:

http://tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/charts.html?modelx=33&model1=717&model2=721&chart=286

These are interactive GPU charts at tomshardware guide, you can pick 2 cards and a benchmark and it will show you the frame rates, the link above should have the 7600GS and the 6800GT selected with the Doom3 benchmark with medium(ish) settings.

The 6800GT performs better, which actually now I think about it, not that supprising, since it was basically one of the top range 6xxx cards. The 7600GS is a bit more of a medium to budget range in the 7xxx series and in all likelyhood just performs slower.

Prey benchmark shows similar patterns, as does BF2141.

thanks for the link but why is it that on Doom 3 at 1024 x 768 i only get 60 when in that test it is getting 82 FPS thats a big difference ( i havent tested with AntiAliasing yet)

just for comparison to give you some insight.

152.0 FPS for me, sli 7600GT OC's, no AA.

your results seem a tad low for running the tests on a 7600GS without AA, IMO. you kick the crap out of my barton/x800 rig though. :p

well in that case, how come the test frame rates for Quake 4 for my card are 20 FPS higher than my recorded Doom 3 frame rates? Surely Quake 4 should be comparable to Doom 3 since it uses its engine?

By default, Doom3 (and games based off its engine like Quake4 and Prey) limit your framerate to 60 FPS. There is a command (I don't know it off hand) that you can enter into the command line to remove this limit. Whenever a website benchmarks Doom3 they turn off the 60 FPS limit (which is why their score might be higher than yours at 1024x768).

are you using the latest patched version of doom 3?

Im suprised you get that much performance out of athlon 3500 and 7600. Id say your right at where you should be.

No i dont have the most recent version of Doom 3 but i believe that the upgrades gave no significant increase to performance

Its all well and good saying that I am at the right place for someone with a Athlon 64 3500+ and 7600 GS but when the test stats say otherwise then there is an issue

:D Is your display driver installed for your monitor and are you only using 60Hz??????/

1024x756 you should be able to get at least 75hz to 100hz with a 17"crt or a 19"crt and if ya got a lcd bigger than 19"widescreen it should be set to 60hz or 75hz ,,Which ever is the Highest Hz your monitor can support @ 1024x756 then rerun your benches...

If you list the options of the 93.71 nvidia control panel i can tell ya what to tweak real easy......

For starters Dont Use TRIPPLE BUFFER or Vsync and Clamp the LOD bias first....

Im starting my other Pc that has a 6800oc in it which uses the same tweaks ill read its menu then post it so you can see....

Ok the last two lines are cut off on the menu ,,They were Tripple buffer and Vysnc ,,make shure both those settings are Off! as for the Antialiasing and Anisotropic try these settings all way up first then if Fps drops lower Adjust those two settings only..!!trust me:D These tweaks are for 5500 5700 5950 6800 7300 7600 7800 7900 7950 8600gt 8600Gts

why wouldnt you install the patch for the game?? patches fix problems not just performance.

well as you can see i gave him couple a tips ,,,i woulda patched it too but from his reply i dont think he was ganna:eek:

a 7600GS is significantly weaker then a 6800GT, it is more around the level of a beefed up 6600GT, so those scores look bang on to me

as for the framerate cap, im not sure about doom3, but Q4 doesnt cap FPS when running a timedemo

you said the card is 2 days old, its not to late to return it for a 7600GT, which should be slightly faster then those 6800GT numbers you have

well if u click on tomshardware guide its 80 fps for the 7600gs, but hes using a a quad x6800.

So your score seems correct.

Doom3 and Quake4 use the same engine and even come from roughly the same era but that doesn't mean scores are comparable, per object frame rates might be comparable but they are vastly different games with different artwork, I don't think you can directly compare them, for instance Quake4 is a lot more CPU heavy and can gain hefty performance increases with the dual core patch.

Please also note that websites doing benchmarking of that card also probably use much better CPU/RAM to eliminate the CPU as potential bottleneck, you're running quite old hardware in that respect, it certainly wont measure up to what THG uses (quad core I think)

thanks for all your responses guys but i have just one last question, the following review shows the Quake 4 tested framerates using almost exactly the same setup as me, the setup was:

Motherboard MSI K8N Neo 2,

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Socket 939,

2x512 mb Corsair TwinX PC3200 XL,

Hard disk Western DIGITAL Raptor 36 GIG Serial-ATA 150

http://xtreview.com/review140.htm

Their framerates are up around the 60 fps average mark for 1280 x 1024 on Quake 4 version 1.2, with my setup will I be able to expect almost the same results, even though on Doom 3 at 1280 x 1024 the average on my system was only 42?
