Im gonna build my new machine soon, Im just waiting on some parts to be released, But anyhoo I think Im planning to build a:

Athlon64 3800 (90nm winchester)
740GD Raptor
1024MB OCZ pc3200 Rev 2. 2-2-2
BFG Geforce 6800Ultra

Will this setup be able to hit a solid 60+fps for Doom 3 and Farcry at 1024x768 Max Settings?

come on, you must know the answer to your own question...

I think he just wants people to say, "oh that is going to be a kick a$$ system, blah blah blah" I think you need to take the 0 out of that 740GD Raptor. Oh also change that GD to a GB....

I know it can hit 60fps, but im being serious let me reword my question will it dip below 60fps i know it will hit 100+ in certain parts of the game and such but in like areas with multiple units will it dip?

it will clip below 60 at some points mainly due to ai and physics though. (during heavy fire fights)

Of course it may dip below 60 fps at times, but what are you going to do, buy a faster video card? ;) As was said above, if this system won't do it, it won't be done.

actually if you check the model name of the 74gig raptor drives, its 740GD :)

go to device manager and look in disk drives..its labelled as a 740GD heh

My question is, why would you run it at 1024x768? The system could handle much more. You could easily do 16x12 with no AA and anyone will tell you it looks better than 1024 w/ 8xAA.

Unfortunately, these games can't guarantee 60fps stable.

wow, i though i had problems...

that’s just the companies model number

You know, if you actually read up a few posts, he was stating that the original poster made a mistake when posting 740GD. He thought he meant 74GB, and I told him it was the model and he didnt believe me.

I know if could do 16x12 but I hate it when games dip below 60 when a couple of objects jump in front of the screen, so If i lowered the res i was hoping maybe it will stay above 60 constantly but by the answers im getting i guess not.

Lol, i dont really mind it dipping below i was just curious to see if a high end machine now would be able to keep its fps above 60 thats all :D :p

I doubt that system would keep it from dipping @ 640x480.

I just don't think it is going to happen for awhile. Hell, look at the older games, the good ones, it took a few generations before that happened.

I'd love to be proven wrong tho...

:D

Really the only way to keep D3 from dipping would be to run it at Medium quality. Your Proc should be able to handle AI and other math, it's loading the massive amount of new textures that can cause you problems. Medium Quality compresses the textures a bit if I'm not mistaken. Unfortunately it also turns AF off...

Exactly... there is really nowhere to go but down. You might squeeze another few frames out with an FX or an extra gig of RAM, but you would never know. Tip: careful with your sound card solution.
