Doom 3 Enviorment Interactivity -> BORING.

What bothers me is people forget what the game is supposed to be. It is NOT some deep thoughtful game or anything other than a linear shoot-em-up zombie game. People were expecting way too much from a game that wasnt meant to be what people expect.

blowing walls up, shooting out signs, smashing keyboards = not the sign of a deep thoughtful game. just of a game that really uses its engine.

Yeah really. LOL. Too bad we can't flush his post. Damn [H] Forum ENGINE! NO GAMEPLAY! NO INTERACTION!

Which Painkiller did better.

Care to tell us why exactly the flashlight is useless? I can safely say you'd be royally fucked without it relatively early in the game.

As for the physics, id said that the physics would be in but in more limited quantity to save on cpu cycles, the game is doom 3 where you're killing zombies and demons, it is not "push the box along like a tool for no reason".

So let's say you could blow up toliets and have water squirt all over the place from the pipes. How would that add anything to the gameplay?

Immersion is everything.

Die-hard fanboys keep saying that this game is all about atmosphere. The atmosphere isn't believable if you can't interact with the environment. There should be consequences involved with everything you do (I.E. Do you use a rocket launcher on the Hell Knight and risk blowing apart a wall that serves as an atmospheric shield, or do you find another way to kill it?).

I'm wondering what they've been working on for these past two years. The graphics engine has been set in stone for quite some time now, and the level design isn't exactly varied or innovative. There aren't enough random occurences to suggest that anything more than average testing was necessary, so what did they spend the time on?

Anytime something is this popular (Doom 3) there will always be people to tear it down. That's life. We mock what we don't understand.

It happens with movies too. Ever visit the Rotton Tomatoes forums? They have people tearing down great movies there too. Some people are not happy unless they can sit in front of their PC and tell everyone on the internet how much something sucks.

And just as many willing to like it so they can cheer for the underdog and have some sort "I'm super leet because I understand it and you just aren't smart enough to grasp the fine points". You know the people. The same ones when you ask What are you listening to? they say "Super flaming Pogo Vomiting Bozos. They are an independent band. But I'm sure you haven't heard of them because you aren't cool enough to listen to Gothic Preindustrial Techno Fusion Jazz Polka Rap."

EDIT: I'd like to say somebody strung a combination like that at me recently and it was a compelling song by a compelling group and the most influential album in years. And it sounded like every other techno song I've ever heard.

You summed it up well, Wonder...

Since you others want to generalize and cop-out by saying we don't understand, why don't I sum up Doom III in one sentence; it's a series of dark boxes and tunnels with a few monsters added for flavor. Now, doesn't that just piss you off?

YOU CAN FLUSH THE TOLIETS!

I don't know if this has been posted in the thread (I didn't read everything) but the toliets are AUTOMATIC, I mean come on , this is the future. You just have to go stand in front of one then back away and it flushes it self.

Everyone is complaining about you cannot break anything(i.e. - the glass, etc) in the game. you can break it in some points, but it is still a long way from what people here seem to want. personally i would like to be able to destroy the building, blowing chunks out of the walls and blowing doors up instead of opening them. red faction is the only game i have ever seen do anything close to that, (there may be others i have not played) but it was by no means anywhere as well put together as doom 3 is. in the future we may get games that allow us this freedom, but realize that it probably takes a lot of cpu time and power to reform objects(this is probably not applicable to breaking glass, vending machines. at least not to the same degree). i think doom 3 does a great job with atmosphere and giving you the reality that is doom.

i will shut up now and let you go back to arguing.

Here's some info, might be somewhat shocking for you:

Doom3 is not a MORPG.

It's a pure FPS. Anybody who got the game expecting more only set themselves up for dissapointment. As far as FPS goes, it's awsome. As far as scaring the shit out of you, also awsome. And as far as startling you, well, that's pretty damned awsome too. ( "accidently" single-shotgun shot killed an Imp, if that's what the fireball throwing things are ).

I tried to flush the toilet first thing as well :)

I guess you have to ask yourself what makes a game have good graphics? To me being able to interact with the environment add to the overall gameplay. Isn't what we're moving toward with video games... an interactive, life-like environment. Flushing toilets, blowing doors off their hinges, breaking glass etc etc make the game.

but see toilets in the future don't flush, they vaporize the waste, which is why you can't flush. duh! and doors don't have hinges in doom3. and there is breakable glass in doom3, but some glass is extra strong and not penetrable, after all if some was, then all oxygen would be sucked out. see it all makes sense  any other concerns?

You know what would make this more realistic?
Make it so at a radom moment, your guy suddenly gets a bad case of dierhea and has to take a dump while fighting the butt demons from getting him :p

When he sees his first monster, make him shit himself, and teh screen turnesbrown, and the monsters look at you, sniff, then run and hide :p

Be able to have sex with dead monsters ( its nasty but i bet you would all try it)
maybe live ones, at your own descression...

Be liek a real human, and as soon as one of them monsters hit you, you literally fall to pieces( i.e. your head gets ripped off) and then it goes game over "its your faults u wanted extra realism" maybe lose an arm and use it as a wepon... Why cant u use teh demon wepons, like the shoulder cannosn and huge rocket launcher...

How about he smells somthign and then immediatl vomist on the zombie next to it...

Make him take some futre stim drugs, i know those mariens got to have a lot of em.. Make its so he can just go nuts and kill everything in 1 puch, while u see ur body falling apart from overpower.... (hit somthign so hard ur wrist breaks in half) :p

Perhaps the engineers who designed the place should have hooked the emergency back up lighting into the automatic flushing circuit. I mean, come on, this is the future!

I don't understand why people feel so compelled to defend this game. If you liked it, fine. This topic is for those expressing dissatisfaction.

IMO if this game had come from so no-name company and been named Hell on Mars instead of DOOM people wouldn't be so keen on it.

I've been playing Doom 3 for the past few days now, and so far what I have seen is great interactivity, sure you cant flush a toilet, but you can read terminals, knock over chairs, punch water jugs, mess with equipment and piss off the workers. However I was slightly dissapointed that you couldnt break most mirrors. And as for the windows most of those windows are bullet proof incase there ever was an air lock leak or somthing along those lines. All and all they give you enough interactivity to have fun but not so much that you would be side tracked flushing a toilet for 24 hours straight.

I agree with the poster about the lack of interactivity, and I must say that Doom3 is just plain BORING. Also, I don't know how the hell you guys can be scared by the same scripted events over and over again (ie. two imps spawn, one in front of you and behind you), but for me the game quickly lost any shock value after several hours of play. Oh I'm sure its terribly exciting to walk around, kill monsters, find pda, open door, and repeat this about 20 times in some very forgettable (easily the 1st 1/2 of the game), albeit good looking evironments. Also, what the hell is with the crappy weapon models and sounds? The pistol looks like a damn penis and sounds equally exciting, the machine gun is just terrible, the plasma rifle puts me to sleep, and there are no new weapons to be found at all throughout the game (soul cube doesn't really qualify). What the game does well is graphics and atmosphere (sound modeling), but this does not make up for the very uninspiring gameplay. I guess if your thing is playing a game with gameplay dating back 10 years, then Doom3 must be awesome, but for me, I expect a whole lot more, especially after games like Far Cry and Half-Life.

Gamespot's review was right-on, IMHO, but I would have given the game an 8.1 rather than 8.5.

>....painkiller is like a cartoon half the time,

Yes, but it did the mindless killfest better the Doom 3 does. I think the most enemies ever on screen was like 5 or 6 of the spiders. Painkiller has had dozens. And for most of the enemies in Doom 3, if you rush up and fire the shot gun into the teleport pentagram, you kill one of the two enemies for that room. I don't think I ever ran out of ammo in D3. I'm always running out in Painkiller.

if you think painkiller is harder you must suck at it for some reason. ive NEVER run out of ammo in pain killer either, and all the monsters are ONE HIT. unless you get lucky with the craptastical shotgun in D3 and get a headshot (any any effectiveness with it requires you to be in melle ranger) you will be emptying a full clip of pistol or half a clip of machinegun into the monsters. painkiller is one hit kills on a crapload of monsters, doom3 is many hit kills on a few monsters.

also painkiller was much MUCH more mindless than doom3, doom3 has an enviroment and atmosphere, painkiller had pretty levels but it was all open deathmatch rings basically. i even got bored with the demo after playing it 5 or 6 times because it was shoot at a group, run to the other side, shoot the group that spawns there, a few flying guys spawn on the corners, shoot them, a group of ground monsters spawns on the other side, etc etc etc.

.

ID has never really made a great game. While the original Doom was a great game I think it was mostly due to luck. They where wery lucky because Doom was original. Remember Wolfenstein was original to, but it was boring because the levels all looked the same.

Quake 1 was boring as hell in singleplayer. Quake 2 was a B-movie made into a game that you could finish with only using the double barrel shotgun, and the only real inovations where enemies that could duck and polygon explosions. Quake 3 was kinda good but to basic for the general gaming public who dont want to play hardcore competition FPS's. Just take a look at Medal Of Honor or Jedi Outcast to see what great games could be made with the Q3 engine when a developer who dont eat sleep and drink mathematical formulas are being creative.

I figured this out long ago, ID suck at gameplay. Doom was a great game, but put it besides Duke Nukem 3D and it becames shocking how much more evolved the gameplay was in Duke 3D. Quake 1 sucked, look what Malice, a mod and total conversion did with the Quake engine, an amazing game and much better than Q1.
Look at the difference between Half Life and Quake 2. They are miles apart even though they where released the same year. IMHO Quake 2 is a big joke. ID havent got a clue about playability, but the press needs to hype them because they push technology and technology sell hardware.

I couldn't agree more. I'm tired of fps that have a rpg element to it. I don't wanna that in a fps, the game is meant to shoot things, and thats what I want to do, shoot things. Doom 3 gives that to me in a huge way. I get to run around and kill a crap load of zombies and monsters. Don't get me wrong i like RPGs but I don't want them invading my FPS games, I like the to be separated. Doom 3 so far in my book, is one of the best single player fps games I have ever played.

way to go. wolfenstein was amazing because it was the FIRST FPS 3d-ish shooter. doom was amazing because it was the FIRST more-3d game than wolfenstein that did so much with so little. it ran on a freaking 386 for crying out loud, yet looked really, really good. i can tell you didnt like doom3 because you dont like quake, both games have dark and 'spooky' atmospheres. duke3d was released AFTER doom so I dont see why you even compare them. OMG guess what, doom3 is more advanced than quake2, so obviously quake2 sucked! no quake2 had a decent engine but did lack anything really unique, but you can tell that they drew a lot for doom3 from the way they did quake 2, esp the way they draw technology.

but really, you can say that they push hardware, even though...they dont. doom was designed to run on hardware THEN and didnt take into account anything from the future...it runs like crap on my computer. quake was the limits of HARDWARE rendering and they never put much work into GLQuake, the only version that can take advantage of a 3d card. Hell P133, 16 megs of RAM, i can see those standard-issue specs really pushing upgrades. quake2 took advantage of any 3d card you could throw at it but again, ran fine on what was already in most homes. quake3 is the same, works fine on anything then and now. its minimum requirements were well below what was the standard then. doom3 is the ONLY game that really hasnt run fantastic on average hardware today, even though it still WILL run playable on nearly anything one would have.

you seem to not like shooters either, because thats what all those are. heres a hint: the object of the game is to....SHOOT THINGS! and all of those games accomplish that really well.

Quite a few of you are being pretty immature about this...

As for the linear comment of mine, no, I don't want a MORPG, but look at a game like Far Cry, I can sneak around to the other side and skip some parts and still complete the game, Doom 3 has a sequence of events that have to happen, hence linear.

And yes, you can flush the toilets by walking over a sensor, I guess I just want my use button back so I can flush it, and so I can open all the doors.

but those ARE NOT GAME PLAY, those are ENGINE. you have it ass-backwards.

Shure they are. When you're playing the game you can't shoot your way through a door 'cause it's locked, and there's a big monster coming at you, but you're out of ammo, it sure as hell IS gameplay. The engine has a lot to do with gameplay, if it's slow as molasses, then gameplay sucks.

What kills it for me is the limitations on interactivity that exist in the game environment. When I'm walking around and I'd like to explore a certain area or manipulate a certain device but I cannot because it's not allowed by the engine but seems more than reasonable to be able to do in the real world it's extremely annoying. I'm talking about simple things like the limitations on movement, especially jumping, that are inherent to the engine. It's really aggravating that you can jump on a box that is waist-high, but you can't pull yourself up on a box that is chest high because your jumping ability does not raise you over the top of the bigger box. There were numerous times I wanted to be able to go somewhere or do something but couldn't because the engine didn't allow it. In one room (the lab with the huge machine blasting a beam down a hallway that you had to crawl down and open a service door while avoiding the beam) there was a broken window on a walkway that you jumped down to get in the room. There was a cart with a box on it that you could push around to place so you could jump back up. It was retarded that you couldn't manipulate the box and cart so you could stack them intelligently so you could climb back up. The cart would fall over and on its side it was much shorter than when it was standing up. You could do nothing to right it and make it stand back up. It feels like someone chopped your arms off and welded weapons to the stumps, you can't manipulate anything in your environment. Hell, the walkway was about chest high to begin with, if you were actually there it would be an easy matter to simply pull yourself up, it would not be a superhuman stretch of the imagination to accomplish this.

Bottom line is that it's exceedingly frustrating when the game engine presents an environment seemingly so detailed, but simple things that you could do easily if you were actually there are beyond the scope of the engine, but look tantilizingly possible.

Um...not to be a dick or anything.

But why not just play Far Cry then?

After playing the game for two nights (I'm just starting Recycling 2), I read the GameSpot review, and this paragraph seemed to sum it all up for me:

edit: OK...these two paragraphs...

"Since Doom 3 purports to have a plausible premise, suddenly, aspects of the game that you might not normally question will start to stick out as being annoyingly inconsistent. You'll undoubtedly find time to wonder about these logic gaps as you fight throughout the UAC base, especially if you've played other recent first-person shooters that do a better job of justifying their plots. Why would a 22nd-century space marine be sent into action in a darkly lit area without night vision goggles of some sort, or even a helmet? Why wouldn't any of his weapons have light-amplification modules built into them when even today's weapons frequently do? Why, instead, is he stuck carrying around a very weak flashlight with unlimited battery life? Why is he unable to hold a gun and the flashlight at the same time? Why are the UAC's small, spiderlike sentry drones so incredibly powerful? You'll see these helpful little guys rip through droves of hellspawn even faster than you can. If the base's defenses are so tough, then why is everyone so worried, and why is everyone getting killed? Doom 3's central gameplay conceit simply doesn't fit in with the premise of the game, and this is a problem only because Doom 3 chooses to try to make you feel like you're in a believable, fully realized world. Doom-inspired shooters, such as Serious Sam and Painkiller, wisely followed the classic game's arcadelike nature by never even purporting to be plausible and simply focusing on run-and-gun action. So it's ironic that Doom 3's ambitions to be a story-driven game mostly just end up getting in the way and weakening the overall experience.

As mentioned, Doom 3 is pervasively dark; there's rarely a moment when your entire field of vision isn't predominantly shrouded in thick, black shadow. This contributes heavily to Doom 3's creepy, claustrophobic feel and it does indeed give the gameplay a distinctive quality. However, the constant extremely dark settings conspire with the frequently repetitive level design to contribute to gameplay that can often feel monotonous, especially since the action itself is very straightforward. What's more, the game's levels will occasionally require you to backtrack through dark hallways without clear markings, so rather than constantly blasting monsters, you may end up spending an undue amount of time just trying to get your bearings. There's a sizable arsenal of weapons to be found here, but none of them are completely satisfying to use. Pretty much all the guns are direct-fire, point-and-shoot weapons with no alternate firing modes and no close-range melee attacks; they do look impressive onscreen, but they all sound surprisingly tinny and subdued, rather than loud and powerful."

I understand that Doom3 is supposed to be a simple remake of the original Doom, which is essentially run-and-gun action, but, to be honest, I was expecting more of a storyline, and more variety in the action. A remake is SUPPOSED to not just repeat the original, but expand upon it in every way (not just graphics and sound). After playing games like RTCW, MP, MP2, HL, and others, I guess I just prefer a more immersive story behind the environment. Take this as you please...

Why does everyone say that the original Doom (from 1994) was so ground breaking in 3d games? Am I the only one who remembers Ultima Underworld 1 (from Looking Glass games, 1992)? Sure, Doom was perhaps the first really popular FPS game, but to me at least the engine used by UW was greatly superior.. Just my 2 cents :)

 As soon as I noticed nothing happens to things when you shoot them I realized this game is not worth $50. I'm dissapointed I paid $46 (plus tax!) to buy it. I want some of my money back Id!

I think that is my biggest complaint. The game sets things up, and then nothing. At first I was nervous about using a sentry because everybody that talks about them says they tend to have faulty IFF and could turn on you. They never do. It would been cool if the sentry turned on you, or would led you into hazardous situations. Or a room full of sentries that all decided you deserved to die. Or some did and the good sentries turned on the bad sentries.
