I remember the quake 3 demo being released like 2 or 3 months before quake 3 shipped, i wonder why id software hasnt released the Doom 3 demo yet if it is really on schedule for a release this year. It sure would be nice to see some benches.

never...maybe about 4 - 5 months after the offical release. There is no reason them to release a demo, the game is as good as sold already.

Demo's are usually released so people can get an idea of what there getting into. HL2/D3 we know what we are getting into. And even if we didnt valve/ID know that were going to buy the game anyway.

Demo could have some bad publicity come out if people dont like the game.

With all the hype surrounding Doom 3 and HL2 the games can be nothing but a dissapointment to many. It's just like what happened to the Phantom Menace... everyone thought it was going to be the end all be all movie that will redefine every aspect of cinema as we know it. Look how that turned out.

I doubt we'll see a demo, but not for those reasons. I think demos are for multiplayer games, to work out all the kinks. Singleplayer is much less broad than that, with so many more controlled variables it's easier to release a good product without having to test it publically. I think id usually uses demos to test out their multiplayer, which is smart and more developers should do this.

No demo, but also don't agree with the previous poster, as I think DOOM3 will rock, even though i think it will already and am hyped. It's just that good.

Daikatana comes to mind...

Rofl i remember that game, omg the horror, its like they tried to code while drinking taquilla and hanging upside down at the same time... talk about buggy !

I remember hearing at one point that id was going to release a test demo like on their previous games for Doom3, but it appears that since one hasn't been released yet I highly doubt one will be. Doom3 has probably already gone gold or almost there, so releasing a test demo now would be pointless.

Yep that game was a trip. I liked the demo but the game realy sucked, it was so gay

Daikatana was without a doubt the most over-hyped piece of shit ever released.

Romero thought he was all that, and ended up looking like a chump. Well, at least he has lots of money from the original dooms and a hot wife

Doom III will itself be the demo for later good games which will use the same engine. I'd guess it's going to be a run and gun straight forward game with pretty graphics for the masses just like every other id game out there. The engine is what makes it interesting. The game portion itself is just an afterthrough.

i kinda agree with you there, dont get me wrong i spent countless hours in Quake 3, but as far as game play i think i had more fun on the other games released with the quake engine, like RTCW enemy territory, Soldier of fortune 2 was one of the best multiplayer shooter for realism ever, and oh yeh jedi knight 2 jedi outcast was a blast.. i am sure there are more but those were the ones i remember most. So i guess i am kinda excited about what other people can do with the D3 engine.

The thing I find interesting about this release is ID has been working on it for so long. What was the longest gap between games before this one? 2 years maybe? D3 has been developed for nearly 5 years. Maybe it will be something special.

Its going to be amazing to see how much both companys make with the realeases of Doom 3 & Half-Life 2.

I know i'm definately getting Half-Life 2 Special Edition Pack.

hey i remember when i use to shell out $60+ for a PS1 game back in the day, so paying for a great PC game doesn't bother me at all.

And shouldn't bother anyone else either.

only downside is using a prog like Steam w/HL2, errr just the thought of it makes me sick. buy hey, it might turn out to be the best thing since sliced bread!!!

Demos cost too much to the company, think about it, they have to design the package AND give the bandwith out, like someone said earlier, it is as good as sold!

I disagree with you there, i have goten screwed on so many past games for the longest time i wouldnt buy a game unless i have played the demo, in my experience some of the games i wouldnt have ordinarily purchased i did infact purchase because the gameplay was fun in the demo. Did any of you play in the guildwars E3 event, that was an alpha stage game demo and it was rock solid and fun as hell, they because of that have secured my money for that game when it releases along with about 5 of my closest friends.. and that is just one example, so if it does cost em a little they will make it back easily by the customers they have won thru their demo.. it may be good as sold to shooter fans, but what about non-shooter fans who just want to give it a wirl and end up liking the thrill of it all or something who knows, in my opinion a demo is worth more than a thousand words.....

What is that and will it see release this century?

i heard someone say that there will be 2 versions of HL2 released, the HL2:SE is both in the same box.

if its not that, then its HL2 and included are Counter-Strike & Day of Defeat (w/the HL2 engine of course :D )

I never said it was good for the consumer, i just said it would cost the company too much to put out a demo. I have never seen a game that has much anticiaption as Doom3. Look at how many people are buying next gen video cards just so they can play it at better fps and more quality.

If they can pursuade people to buy their game thru a demo how are they loosing money exactly ? As far as the actual game play of doom 3 i could carelesss about, i played the very first doom back in the day and havent played another since, the only thing that makes doom 3 exciting this time around is the new graphics engine.. dont remember if there is going to be multiplayer support or not, but that is the big one for me...

Not if they get more sales.
The original Doom was about 10 years ago. There is an entire generation that hasn't played it. Believe it or not.

A demo would help get it out. Not like id has to worry about sales, I'm sure they'll be happy as it is, but as mentioned above, demo's have practical uses as well.

Damn near every game I've purchased without playing first has some major issue that would have changed my mind, but I had already plunked down $50 for it.

Spiderman for the PC... joke... Need for Speed High Stakes... good game, no support. It works properly on 9x, not 2k or XP... it can be made to work, but...

Demo's sell games, that is what got me started on Warcraft... And I own every Warcraft game since, and playing demo's for them first is what sealed the deal.
