Don't laugh (n00b question)

Well if there is a possibility of the software having SSE3 support in it then I would say go for the Pressy otherwise the Northwood at a higher clock speed will do just fine.
 
The SSE extentions speed it up at the expense if video quality. On all of my systems, Athlons and P4s, I encode using FPU for that reason. If quality is secondary to speed, I still recommend Northwood as the Prescott isn't really adding anything to the system at this point.
