Hyperthreading enabled: PC unstable
I upgrade to P4 3.06Ghz with HT. As soon as I enable HT, the PC becomes unstable and locks up in nearly every program....All said I must re-format after fitting a HT P4......I nearly did....
I always wondered what will happen if I uninstall the Processor:
I then disable HT, boot, UNINSTALL the Processor[Only 1x], reboot, go in BIOS and enable HT again, boot.....The system loaded the 2x Processor drivers again. That solved 95% of the lockups. At that stage I just could not do intensive disk work, like defrag or NAV scanning...By updating the intel chipset, rebooting solved to lockup finally. The system is now stable and I cannot get it to crash with HT enabled, no matter how many things I run similtaniously.
:D
Thought you might want to know...So don't be afraid to uninstall your prcessor, and reboot.....It may just help

Indeed, infact I have added processors to servers with deleting the "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" with a "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" kernel. (under computer in device mangler)

This is how I got HT to work on my Dell PC at work. They haven't upgraded to XP yet, so we're stuck on 2000...and even though Intel recommends against HT on 2k, it's worked beautifully and I've never had a hiccup.

It took me 2x weeks to make this decission, it just stiked me at last to try it.
If I had updated the chipset 1st, this probably would not have happened, because disk would have been stable under HT. :D

The moral of this story is, not to upgrade if your disk can become unstable, but I just simply did not forsee it, causing the processor drivers to go corrupt in some way, or one of the two at least.

With XP I've not had any issues with HT. I've setup machines with non-HT Pentium 4's and then installed a HT chip and haven't had any issues. Windows will detect the second CPU and add it. All is well after that.

I noticed that if HT is disabled, the processor runs warmer than with HT enabled, this was the main reason I wanted HT to work on this PC with my way of cooling.

:(
With old processor without HT at 2GHz:[Old heatsink]
Say room temp is 18c, then the temp in bios would be 18+7=25c
then the temp at Welcome screen would be 18+5=23c
then the temp at full load will be 18+10c=28c.

With old processor without HT at 3.06GHz:[New heatsink with copper]
Say room temp is 18c, then the temp in bios would be 18+10=28c
then the temp at Welcome screen would be 18+10=28c
then the temp at full load will be 18+15c=35c

then the temp at Welcome screen would be 18+3=21c
then the temp at full load will be 18+11c=31c

This is more or less, but there is a markeble increase in temp when this P4 with HT is run without HT.....Could this be a flaw in the Processor drivers or is it just simply the Motherboard chipset causing it ? :D

You probably talking at new motherboards. This is a relatively old Gigabyte GA-8IEXP Rev 1.2 MB. In fact 8 out of 10 people I asked, said they won't advise me to do this, cause the 845E chipset would be unstable with HT, and you have to re-install operating system. ;) .

The only 2 that said it was possible was one dealer, and Gigabyte themselves, in fact Gigabyte said I can only fit this specific 533/512 P4 3.06Ghz on this board. Seeing that I won't blow any dollars on a new PC before at least end of next year[Let all new changes sette], I continiued.

I am sorry to say to those that opposed this upgrade, that it in fact works well, and is totally stable now...No problems, no error messages, without reformatting!! :D
