Would you rather have something like this (in form of projector & screen, LCD, OLED, whatever)
or a 32'' 4K display?

What is the end-game of displays for you? Is it full immersion and total FOV coverage?

Full actual virtual reality like .hack and SAO (granted in the former the original idea was more similar to Occulus Rift actually... I don't even know how the heck they actually controlled their characters). That's the end game I would love to see. Well, without the getting trapped in the game and all that other weird crap.

In terms of where we are likely to end up at before I die? Probably occulus rift-ish device in some kind of environment that simulates an endless expanse of space (which would be extremely expensive to build). Frankly as fast as technology has advanced since I was born, I'm still disappointed at the rate. Would think we could be further along by now, rather than "here's LCD rehash number 341414! Look, we cut the panel up slightly differently so now the thing is 1920x1920! Isn't that just crazy cool? Now let us charge you out the wazoo for our extremely fresh new idea!" or "NOW WITH MORE PIXELS PACKED INTO THE SAME RECTANGULAR SHAPE THAN EVER! Order yours now for only 3x the price of the previous rectangle". I think the economic system favors slow advancement while milking any previous one like mad.

Not that your dome is necessarily a bad idea, but seeing things as if they were all around me while I'm sitting there mashing buttons to interact with the environment is just silly.

not even a fair choice.........

when vr headsets with cameras outside could show you the outside world through the vr display, and you can't tell that you're looking through the real world through a display+camera instead of a piece of glass

it'll be tricky to make depth perception completely realistic though... you'd need something like https://research.nvidia.com/sites/default/files/publications/neld-abstract.pdf

I would have to be in front of this to see how the fish-eye that is apparent in the video plays out.

That dome looks intriguing. The concept works really well for immersion in the "Soaring Over California" ride at Disneyland. That's obviously not the best comparison but there are definitely benefits if the dome is big enough.
