Dolby Digital decoding?

If a game (like Thief3 or Doom3) has Dolby Digital compatibility, how can I use this to feed a digital signal into a home theatre system?

I have an Audigy soundcard...

Thanks for any advice.
 
You need an nForce2 motherboard with MCP-T Northbridge and a digital SPDIF out. That's the only way you'll get a Dolby Digital signal to your receiver. Neither your Audigy, nor any other PCI sound card can encode Dolby Digital content. The digital out on your card can only pass on information that has already been encoded (like on a DVD).

Note that Thief3 and Doom3 support Dolby Surround, not Dolby Digital, as there is no way to encode a DD stream on the fly without the Dolby ICE (interactive content encoder) hardware built into the MCP-T.

You can get 6 channel surround sound, but it will be through the analog outputs on the back of your card. If your home theatre receiver has 6ch discrete inputs, you can do it that way. If you connect digitally, you will only get 2 channel PCM audio.
 
lol in other words... GG unless u get an nforce2. however i have heard of people using minjack to rca converters and plugging it into their receivers. so maybe you could try that solution?
 
just a question.... what if you select "digital out" on an audigy 2 zs platinum and run and optical or coax out from the breakout box to a receiver? that should also work just fine i'd think.

Not at all... for surround sound. You will get 2.1- nothing more, nothing less. The game isn't outputting Dolby, it's just using it internally- it makes no difference in how the sound card outputs it. In order to get surround sound and not use Soundstorm, you will have to use the minijack to rca cables as previously stated. With a good soundcard and decent (not bottom dollar) cables, it will sound phenominal (assuming you have a competent surround sound system setup).
