Dolby Digital Decoder

I have an Audigy 2 card and it has an onboard Dolby Digital decoder. I'm intend to upgrade my z640 speaker set to the monstrous z680. I'm also aware that the z680 included its own dolby digital decoder. Is there advanage (or disadvantage) using the decoder on the z680 instead of Audigy's decoder since you can only use one at the time. Is the sound going to be the same on either decoder? Thanks
 
The issue with using the Z680's decoder is it only works via a coax cable ... and when you use a coax cable you won't get 5.1 audio in games or music or anything else that is not encoded in some kind of digital multichannel format (unless you use prologic) ... so the solution is to have discreet analog connectors for games and a coax connection for movies.
Do you think using the Z680's decoder is worth the hassle?
 
The only advantage to using the Z680's decoder is that you'll see the control pod say "dolby digital" on the LCD.

The disadvantages are that you'll lose multichannel functionality on content that has not been pre-encoded (games, mp3s), and that the DACs on your Audigy 2 are probably of higher quality than those in the Z680s.

I'd say stick with the analog connections and enjoy the increased power of the Z680's - save the digital inputs for your XBOX or DVD player!
 
Don't use the Z-680 decoder--it's definitely going to be a cheapier, worse-sounding decoder than the one on your Audigy 2. It has an advantage of being physically and electrically isolated from the noisy computer environment, but I bet Logitech viewed the decoder section as an opportunity to cut costs.

Yep. You have nice DAC's on the Audigy, use them.
