Ok so I'm really excited I get all these great parts for my PC let me go down the list :

Motherboard: Soyo K7VMP2 Socket A Mother board

CPU:: AMD Athlon XP2400+ processor thourghbred core

Video Card XFX GeForce FX5200 128 MB DDR/ 8x/ AGP

Hard Drive Seagate 200 GB Barracuda HD 7200 RPm

and an Extra

Ultra 256 Pc2100 DDR RAM

So here's my problem I install everything except the HD, (because I was just going to drop the existing C into after everything was up and running)
After I do my inital BIOS stuff the the mother board manual said to do, it starts to load then restarts. it's not opening up Windows (XP pro). So I call the Technical help ppl and they tell me that the Chipsets are wrong and I need to reinstall Windows, well I don't have the XP disk so I install 98 SE and I come up with crap it doesn't reconize anything include stuff that I know the drivers are there. and now I have 2 operating systems on my HD 98 and XP.

I need help, I'm not sure where to go form here, I pulled everything out put all my old stuff in I have to choose which Operating system I want to use, after using Xp for like 15 minustes the PC will freeze I reset BIOS to opt working conditions this seems to help with the freezing I want my new PC up and running but I'm not sure how to get it there

if anyone can help thanks I really do appreciate it

ah the newbie upgrader :p (im not hassling, just giggling, cause it happens so often)

Imagine this. You're using to driving a 1975 Mini. You're thrown into the cockpit of a 747 jet, and because you can drive the mini you're expected to be able to fly the plane. You're a gibbering mess because if you do something wrong you'll kill hundreds of people by flying into the side of a mountain. THIS is basically what your motherboard is going through right now, it has nfi what its doing.

What you'll want to do is reinstall. From scratch. Get your (legal i assume) XP cd back from the dumpster out back ;p and reinstall from scratch.

If you cant, and have to install 98, then you're going to have to boot the cd with CD support, and format the drive. You'll lose all of your data however. You'll need to set your bios to boot from CDrom, then start the computer with cd support.

I think with the windows98 cd you can just go "format c:".

If that doesnt work, you may need to go

cd win98
cd tools

format c:

or something to that effect.

After you've formatted the whole lot, you're going to have to reinstall 98.

So let me get this straight if I redo XP, everything is ok with the new Equipment, BUT it I redo 98 I loose everything because I need to format the C drive why is that???


your right this is only my second upgrade so I am new at this it's ok you can poke fun I have a tough hide

No. If you redo WinXP you loose everything unless you back it up, or if you redo Win98 you loose everything unless you back it up. If you beg borrow or steal an XP CD boot from it... have it to wipe out and make a new ntfs or fat32 (your choice) partition then install the OS. Windows98 SE run fdisk wipe out the existing partitions create new one(s) and reboot and reinstall . When you installed win98 did you install the chipset drivers before anything else??? The problem with XP is you had it set up with a bunch of drivers etc... then you put it in a new "unknown" system and expected it to run fine. save a lot of trouble and do a clean install of the OS of your choosing. There is a lot of help available with a little research.
 
Ok, thanks again did a back up then installed everything and Formatted things are working wonderful now it's timet o do some killing on unreal 2004
