I have a video capture device that has been discontinued. It has no Vista support, but it works in XP. Windows 7 has been talking about an "XP Mode". Will this allow hardware with outdated drivers to work on Windows 7?

If it is a usb device you might be able to use it via pass-through. If not, well you really need some newer hardware.

In my case, yes it does - there are no x64 drivers for my Canon Lide20 scanner (old but still perfectly functional and with very decent image quality), but the x86 drivers installed and work just fine in Virtual XP running in Windows 7 x64.

I haven't been able to get it working in a VirtualBox XP virtual machine though, plugging it into a USB port freezes both the VM and the host OS solid, requiring a punch on the reset button to get things back to life...

For things like USB devices it MIGHT work for some if you are willing to use them only inside the VM. For stuff like sound card, network cards, chipsets, video cards absolutely not.

I have an old cheapo Walmart DVD Xpress DX2 USB capture device that doesn't have Vista support (they created some beta drivers for Vista and just dropped it after that) and it works fine in Windows 7 XP mode.
