Does VMem affect 3D Stereo?

I'm in the market for new vid cards for stereoscopic 3D. My question is will VMEM matter? Should I get 3x580 with 1.5 gb memory or will 3x580 3gb memory perform better under stereoscopic 3D? I tried searching online but couldn't find any real 3 way sli benches with 3d enabled etc.

Also: I will be running a single 27 inch @ 1920x1080 for the 3D. I would like to maintain 60fps the entire time. Is this attainable with 3x 1.5gb 580's or should I opt for the 3GB?

I have never used 3D, but at 1080 i really cant see you needing 3 x 3gb 580's honestly i cant really see you needing more than 2 1.5gb 580's. I have 2 x 1.5gb 580's running 3772x1920 on 3 24" ZR24w's. And honestly barring a few games i can run just about anything at more than 60 FPS.

Now if i was buying 580's now and not before the 3gb ones came out i would go ahead and pay a little extra for more memory, but i cant see you needing 3 cards.

I was in the same market and ran into the same problem with lack of information. So I went with 2x eVGA 580s with 3GB on 3 BenQ 3D monitors and works like a charm so far.

The 3 cards is more to futureproof than anything else. Plus I have a PC that honestly should be running 3 cards. (Hexacore 24gb memory). I may add more monitors down the line but I wanted to know if Vmem has any relation to stereoscopic 3d at all.

Its still only 1080p so vram requirements aren't going to change between normal mode and 3d vision. Aside from the odd game or two nothing is going to benefit from 3Gb of vram at 1920x1080.

The 3 cards is more to futureproof than anything else.

There is no such thing as future proofing with PCs. In just a few short months Nvidia will release cards that will mop the floor with the GTX580.

Just make sure that you have a good 3d monitor.

Honestly I don't think VRAM is such as issue after 1GB, unless you are doing 3DVS maybe. But for one 1080P screen 1.5GB is probably fine. I use a single GTX 470 w/ 1.2GB for 1080P 3D and its mostly fine. Granted I have to turn down the settings, but I don't think VRAM is whats holding me back. I found some benches for 2x GTX 580 that may be helpful for you:

I'd say run your games you liek on Nvidia Inspector in the background and check the Show memory usage graph and see what it taps out @. Or just go big.

I have first-hand knowledge of all of this.

Your vRAM usage will increase 10-20%. You won't need more than 1.5 GB of vRAM for, well, anything except: (a) running three 1600p monitors or (b) running Metro at 4x MSAA at 3 x 1080p, (c) possibly some texture mods.

vRam being full!= vRAM "bottleneck"
