I got 2 hard drives, one 160GB and one 500GB and I need a backup solution for files only. I want my operating system on a separate 375GB partition and I want a 125GB redundant (like on 2 hard drives) partition to keep just my files (no programs). Is this possible to do? What is the best way of accomplishing this?

Should I be looking for a software mirroring solution? Suggestions on software to use?
 
Are you looking to do a real time backup of your data from the big drive to the small drive, or just a scheduled backup every day or every week?

If I was you, I would make the OS partition on the big drive about 100 gig or so. Then store your data on the remaining 400 gig. For now you can backup your important data to the second smaller hard drive, and when it fills up, I would recommend getting an external USB drive to backup your data.

Actually a real time mirror of your data is not the ideal solution for a backup. If you accidentally delete something, or the file gets corrupted for some reason (virus or power glitch,) then your data is toast.

I personally use a RAID 5 NAS to hold my data. I backup the important stuff to a Raid 1 NAS. I also have 2 external hard drives that I rotate. I know my solution is overkill for most people, but I would loose the ability to father children if I lost my wife's digital photo collection.

I use a program called Synchback SE to do my backups.

I really hate external HDDs really, they're too fragile and I got dogs who can hurt things. The only thing I am worried about is hardware failure, I'm not worried about the other things because I will be adding to this system later on. I just need a way to store the same data on 2 drives.

If I make 2 partitions on my big drive, one 375GB and one 125GB and then I make a partition on the small drive for 125GB, can't I just keep the 125GB partitions synced with some software? I know it isn't a RAID, but I really just need to keep the data on 2 disks at the same time and synced up.
 
What OS are you using? Do you want it mirrored in real time, or just do a backup to it every day or every week?
 
Hmm, I know you can stripe volumes in Windows, but I don't see an option to mirror them. Too bad as that would be the easiest way. I gotta run right now, but I am sure there has to be software that can mirror partitions. Just do a little searching on the net.
