Does this upgrade make sense?

I currently have an old Conroe E6420 running at 3.2GHz. It's pretty slow in the games I play (TF2, BC2, Dragon Age) and I'm thinking of getting a quad core.

I'm thinking of getting an MSI AM2+ board so I can use my DDR2 paired with a Phenom II X4 955 which I'd like to OC to about 4GHz. In total the upgrade would cost $180.

Is there anything better than this for under $200?

Do you live near a MicroCenter? You can get a better upgrade for your money. DDR3 is so cheap these days, no point in reusing DDR2.

If you are on a budget, why not pop in a Q6600 for $80-100?

There's a microcenter in my state but it's not close enough that it would be economically viable to purchase from them, even with their great deals.

A used Q6600 might be a good idea. I'll give it some thought. What's the average OC on those?

I second the Q6600 for 80 bucks or so. You could keep everything the same and with a good HSF (true 120/hyper 212 + etc) you could get as high as 3.6 if you get lucky and are willing to up the voltage a little higher than avg which should be okay if your only planning on keeping it another year or so...

Or you could do a full cpu/mobo/ram upgrade and sell all your old stuff to give you a bit more breathing room in your budget. ;) I'm guessing you could get at least $100 for your old cpu/mobo/ram ($35/$50/$40)... just a guess, though, since I'm not sure what you have (E6420/DS3R?/4GB?), lol.
