Vista does a lot in the background but it only does it when it has free cycles.. a lot like running seti at home.

I think its fantastic. It's running just as fast as my XP install did and its even prettier to look at.
I may be biased since I didnt have any of the problems alot of other folks had.
I had a bad experience installing Vist'na! on a recend computer. I ended up installing XP Pro instead.
I'm used to installing drivers during Windows install to be able to boot from a SATA drive. But Vista never liked my SATA drivers and would fail to work. That is the short version of the story.

I don't think it really affects it much

Core2 at 88%
that's with a lot of extra things going in the background too, including Performance Monitor, utorrent and lots of Firefox
If you're not using the computer it's going to be higher (FAH %) since superfetch and other processes won't need to be doing anything
Also, Vista indexes certain folders for faster searching. But after everything in those folders have been indexed, it won't index them ever again. You can also disable this or change the locations if you wanted..
Even while it's indexing it shouldn't even be using much anyway. It's very low priority. It's mostly disk usage too, not CPU.

In the last few weeks of running Vista, I've noticed that for the first few hours after a reboot, you have the spastic indexing going. The double whammy is if you have Office 2007 installed as well, as it indexes the whole of your outlook account too.
On the average though, I've never noticed the background indexing to take more than 20-25% of total processor time.

One of the main reasons I didn't install Outlook 2007 or whatever they call it now.

When I was beta testing vista for the last year, I didn't notice any performance drop in folding. At least FaH was one program that never let me down.
