Does the Ion ONLY pair with the atom??

It seems like the ION is getting some positive reviews. It seems as though it beats the inte; 4500HD in most benchmarks.

I have not seen an ION advertised on anything other than an atom CPU. It would sure be nice to see the ION paired with those new core 2 duo or core duo ULV chips that can actually handle flash....

So far the only ultra portables that I have seen using the ULV chips all use the 4500HD.

Is it me or does it seem odd to have an ION on netbooks that can't even play flash and typically include only 1GB of RAM, versus a worse performing 4500HD on ultra portables that can actually play flash and typically have 3-4GB of DDR3 RAM.

Ok so here is some text from the nvidia website. It does not specifically say that the ION can only be paired with an atom.

"NVIDIA® ION™ graphics processors turn up the visuals on compact, low-power PCs with performance up to 10X faster than similar systems. When combined with a low-power CPU like Intel Atom, ION graphics processors transform traditional under-performing PC designs into a premium experience. Discover new ION-based PCs that are small in size but big in performance."

The wording from the wikipedia entry makes it seem like they are tied together though:

"Nvidia Ion is a system/motherboard platform that includes Nvidia's GeForce 9400M (MCP79) chipset, DDR3-1066 or DDR2-800 SDRAM, and the Intel Atom processor. "

Yes, it's limited to atom CPUs. I believe ION is the overall name for the Atom CPU + Nvidia's 9400M.

*insert horrible physics related joke about ions and atoms.*

The ion isn't a thing by itself. It's like "Centrino"

Ion just means it has an atom and a 9400M.

So by saying... the Ion should pair with a C2D... literally makes no sense.

And I think the Laptops/netbooks get an ION LE not a full fledged ION as used in the PC's in a box..........

If your concern is Flash, wait until early next year. Adobe will be releasing flash 10.1 or whatever which will be hardware enhanced. word is, you'll be able to play HD flash video on an Ion system w/ no issues.

if it works as well as it's supposed to, i'm planning on getting an ION netbook w/ hdmi out. maybe the HP mini 311 or something similar.

Yea, been looking at the mini 311 also, my only laptop crapped out on me. Well from repeated drops from me kicking off my bed while i sleep. I got chips in the hardwood floor to prove it, haha. Probably gonna go with that mini 311 or just step up and get that new MSI with core i7, lol.
