Does stacking fans make any difference at all ?

I seen a computer on sale on ebay that had stacked fans in the case.
I just orderd a bunch of fans for my case and was wondering it this makes any sense to do ?

Anybody do it yet ?

WAIT, now that i look at it more. It kinda looks like a reflection...

Anyways, would this make airlfow better at all ?
 
For fans in use for general ventilation, no.

If you want to stack fans, you really need to put something in between the two with vanes to straighten the airflow from one fan before it gets to the next. Stacking fans in this way gives you more static pressure. In a computer, this can only benefit you in places where the fan is blowing against something restrictive....like a CPU heatsink. Stacking fans on a heatsink will theoretically increase the airflow through the heatsink. Doing it for case intake/exhaust fans won't get you any significant change.
 
upon reading this thread i tried this. I stuck four Coolermaster fans ontop of each other to see if the airflow was changed. It increased mildly, but nothing a faster fan wouldnt fix. But then i decided to stick a Vantec Tornado fan ontop of the mix. Hella a difference :D

It was fun till the Vantec put a 6mm gash into my thumb :(


So note to everyone Dont play around with High powered fans
 
haha don't we love our tornados...I've got a dozen scars from them...

stacking fans might not work, but you could try funneling the air from one fan to the next with a duct

General consensus is fan stacking is not worth the effort. A counter rotating fan is required for optimum effect unless you have long vent in between like Mohonri said aboove. Best to get a better single fan instead.

The fans in that eBay case are mounted on top of eachother with no spacer. Thus are likely contributing to the noise factor more than anything.
