does sound card matter when using digital optical?

so i only need a 2 channel digital optical signal to go to my processor... i wont be using anything else off the sound card.. and i was wondering... does the sound card really matter? i figured since the optical signal wont be processed by the sound card's dacs.. then whats the point of a good sound card... an on board one is as good as a whatever sound card one... right?

oh somthing else i need to clarify.. optical spdif uses toslink connectors right? or is it a different thing?

Why does the soundcard that implements a digital output matter? Because of jitter? Because of its ability to output a bitperfect signal? Practically speaking, how much money does one have to spend to get a decent digital signal?

Out of the box or when flashed with another product's firmware?
Cause we all know the AV-710 can output a bit perfect audio stream when flashed with the prodigy firmware but that kills the analog outputs so I am left to wonder if it applies to your question or not.
