Does sound card do anything in this setup?

Given the following setup, would a sound card do anything:

I have a HTPC connected to TV via HDMI and a DVD player/receiver also connected to TV via HDMI. When playing video from the HTPC to TV, sound comes from speakers connected to DVD player/receiver.

Therefore, nothing is connected to the sound card in the HTPC. Does that sound card have any affect at all on the sound?

Hopefully that makes sense and isn't a completely stupid question.
