Does newegg still suck?

Without a knife, how long do you think it would take to break into one of NE's bubble cuccons without an opposable thumb (basically, mimic the environment the drive is transported i). My guess would be a very long time. Plus, drives can take a substantial amount of shock (300G I believe) when in a non operation state, bare. Sure it is nowhere near the overkill that the drive manufatuers actually ship thier drives in (a friend of mine has a 8 inch cube packed full of foam he got when he recived an RMA from seagate), but I have not heard of a massive epidemic of DOA drives from newegg that have been expressly attributed to shipping methods.

The bubble wrap does not need to be broken for the drive to be in danger... as I (and others) have said before, the way newegg wraps the drives, there is a chance that part of the drive (side/edge) is EXPOSED and not protected at all by the bubble wrap. I have even seen a drive where one end wasn't closed, so the drive could have even fallen out. Luckily it didn't, because it was tightly wrapped with the bubble wrap and didn't really move. But it is possible.

I personally have never gotten a DOA drive from newegg, and all the drives I've bought for myself are working great. Not sure about the ones I bought for others, if they've died early or not. But just because the drives aren't DOA, doesn't mean their lifespan has been greatly shortened from improper packaging.
Good thing they've also got a bunch of peanuts, though. Those really help too. Even though it could be dangerous if the drive moves to the side of the box past the peanuts, but it is still pretty good.. does a good job of keeping the products protected.

Which is why I buy just about everything except HDDs from Newegg, and I buy HDDs from ZZF.

The corners of the drives are entirely unprotected. Bubblewrap, even intact one is ineffective here.

Even if there was a bubble at the corner, and even if it could hold the pressure (which is cannot), that would be about 5mm deceleration distance, compared to the 1.5 inch space that the harddrive frames that Zipzoomfly ships in leave.

Not "too bad," just outright unacceptable. From what I understand, shipping blister packs (plastic version of the foam retainer) for single drives are <$0.30 ordered in say, qty 1000.

Newegg just seems hellbent on losing business, I guess.

ZZF does not use bubble wrap for their hard drives. Apparently they use some foam casing or something. I have never ordered a drive from them though.

Last drive I ordered from ZZF, about a year ago, it was in Seagate's Sea-Shield, wrapped in about 3 layers of bubble wrap, and packed inside of a smaller box, that box was packed in the larger box with a few other components, and had at LEAST 5" of peanuts around the components and the sides of the box.

I couldn't figure out why a hard drive, stick of RAM, and a few cables would need a box that was about 20" on each side, and then I remembered ZZF knows how to pack stuff up soundly.

How is ZZF better than Newegg?

I received all my drives from Zipzoomfly in the last two years (I think 8 overall) either in frames or in boxes with guards that hold them by the side. In either case you cannot get the corner of the drive anywhere close to the outer box wall.

I can take pictures if you guys want. You can send them to newegg

I sent the Newegg Webmaster guy a PM with my thoughts and a link to this thread. We all love newegg, just not for HDDs.
