Without a knife, how long do you think it would take to break into one of NE's bubble cuccons without an opposable thumb (basically, mimic the environment the drive is transported i). My guess would be a very long time. Plus, drives can take a substantial amount of shock (300G I believe) when in a non operation state, bare. Sure it is nowhere near the overkill that the drive manufatuers actually ship thier drives in (a friend of mine has a 8 inch cube packed full of foam he got when he recived an RMA from seagate), but I have not heard of a massive epidemic of DOA drives from newegg that have been expressly attributed to shipping methods.
