Does Mass Effect ever get any less boring?

ME1 was a labor of love. I enjoyed the story enough to punish myself through the finish.

ME2 however, is am absolute masterpiece in comparison. They really listened to the community and made it a enjoyable experience from start to finish. And yes thank god they took out the mako.

Agreed on both points. ME2 really took almost every aspect of the game (even the already awesome characters and storytelling) and improved upon it considerably.

I caught myself smiling at the Mako among the wreckage in that DLC mission. :D

Mass Effect 1 was near perfect, and Mass Effect 2 was simplified to an insulting level. Period.

The skill system and the inventory system were simplified. I wouldn't say the rest is. The simplification of the inventory system was a very welcome change. And the removal of the gun skills, where more gun skill = more gun damage, was another welcome change.

I didn't find the inventory system the least bit complicated. Changing gear was so simple. Change weapon to one with more damage, accuracy, etc. If that needs to be simplified, something is not wrong with the game...

But they did really shape up pacing in ME2. Both are excellent games still.

Its get better and more interesting, but if your already puffing out, this game series isn't for you.

I played and finished both games. Enjoyed both of them, and will be getting ME3 on launch day. My ONE complaint with BOTH games is that would it have been REALLY that hard to include procedurally generated mini missions to explore and shoot at stuff? Not side missions where someone gives you it, but you see a planet, land on it, and there's something to do, even if it has no bearing on the story, or doesn't really give you any points.... In both games if you read the descriptions of the planets, there's all sorts of mentions of pirates, but you never get to FIGHT any, hell, a gun turret type game were you blow up pirate ships would be FUN, and break things up a bit......

Jeesh just bought it, sometimes I want to just frag. When laid back I like a storyline. Then again I liked Unreal-UT-Halo PC.
Deus EX one of my favorites of all time-(minus stuttering on big areas)

Have not opened yet..

Amen, all they needed to do was some minor tweaking to make it everything I wanted, but they decided to take some steps back with combat and role playing mechanics. Still a good game though. Looking forward to the next installment.

So far, I'm particularly annoyed that they took out a lot of the customization aspect of weapons. Adding the different upgrades, I really liked that... switching them to powers was just meh, imo.

Mass Effect 1 was slow and tedious till right before the ending, where it finally picked up to a bearable level.

Agreed. The shooting in ME1 was rough at first. Dice roll and skill based shooting also sucked ass in V:tM Bloodlines a few years ago, so I can't say I miss it.

I do slightly miss loot whoring to obsessive compulsive degrees in the first, but the streamlined system really does "work" better IMO.

They aren't procedurally generated, but there are a TON of random side-quests in ME2 that are fairly unique. You just go around to random planets and when you enter orbit EDI will let you know there is an anomaly. It was pretty nice in that they weren't all on the same 3 or 4 maps like in ME1; and some of them actually become extended quest chains (currently clearing out a mech factory on the fritz that is the 3rd quest in a chain).

ME2 is far and away a better game than ME1; sure they simplified leveling and inventory a lot, but they shaped up the pace hugely. ME2's pacing is near-perfect IMO.

The "inventory" system in Mass Effect 2 was complete unadulterated garbage. I agree the pacing and storyline/cutscenes were better, but the core gameplay was too affected by the switch to the crappy new system.

it sucks not having a big selection of weapons, or being able to see any stats on those weapons.

at the same time, the inventory in ME1 was worthless. the only guns worth using were Spectre weapons and everything else was just there for omnigel and credits.

the armor was fine, but is there anyone who used any armor other than predator or colossus? (with the exception of the geth power suit for wrex).

i like the current armor system more, and i wish there was more choice and some stats on the weapons.

What else did you expect once you reach end game? Of course everything else is going to be vendor fodder. Same principle applies to nearly every game. If only they let you omni-gel/vendor multiple items at once that would've made it perfect.

even at the beginning of the game i barely used the crap weapons. they are only worth using for the first 5 or 6 levels. the last 55 levels consisted of me getting inventory and immediately converting it to gel or selling it. why bother with items at that point? did other people use them? money was so abundant that after the first mission you were set.

ME1 was a great game, but anyone arguing that it was perfect is either blind to it's flaws or intentionally ignoring them. Driving the mako across nonsensical terrains is pure dog shit, texture popping is horrible on the xbox, elevator loading sucks, the inventory system is garbage, and the side missions, while compelling stories, were the same thing over and over in terms of location.

The leveling systems hasn't been neutered nearly as bad as most people keep bitching about. You still have to plan your character out to maximize his damage and survivability. You can still control how your teammates upgrade, and they are more useful in combat than anyone in the first game ever was.

The armor is better in this game as well. Rather than having to sift through a bunch of crap that you'll never use (oh yay, another heavy colosus X that my adept has no chance of using) you can buy and find parts to upgrade your armor to suit your combat style. Nevermind the fact that you can now customize your armor to look how you want it to. I'm guessing Bioware will release more pieces of armor through their DL content as well.

There are a couple of weak points in ME2. First is the mineral mining. That is just awful. It's not an improvement over the mako in any way. Second, the main storyline is a bit less compelling for me, and that could just be personal preference. Nothing compares to going back to the citadel and rushing up the outside of the structure killing Geth with Sovereign in the background. That crap was epic. Even still ME2 has a great story.

What they should have done is improved upon the Mass Effect 1 inventory system, instead of scrapping it. It had flaws, yes, but also a lot of promise.

I haven't played ME2 yet (waiting on a new graphics card), but ME1 was amazing. Though I will agree with everyone else that driving the Mako was pretty boring and repetitive, the plot, character progression, and general FPS-RPG combo gameplay struck a chord with me.

Does the pace ever pick up a little or should I just quit now? Seriously, it was interesting for a while, and I like a well-developed plot, but this is more like watching a movie than playing a game.

I'd say quit now. It's an odd game series for me too. Definitely can only play if you're interested in the story, the gameplay is both a little slow and a little easy for anyone who's played some RPGs & FPSs. Still, I definitely appreciate the work they put in to developing a game where your decisions really do effect the outcome of events. I enjoy it, but I can definitely see how it wouldn't be for everyone.
