Does Mass Effect ever get any less boring?

Do they ever stop fucking talking? I WANT TO KILL THINGS. I'm about 4 hours in and I think I've shot a handful of robots and a couple of aliens. The rest of the game so far has been blah blah blah blah blah council blah spectre blah conspiracy blah. Actually reminds me of ES IV:Oblivion a little bit, except on rails. In space. And boring :p

Does the pace ever pick up a little or should I just quit now? Seriously, it was interesting for a while, and I like a well-developed plot, but this is more like watching a movie than playing a game.

The game clearly isn't for you. Sure, you could just go through shooting up everything later on, but you'd be at a disadvantage due to not getting stuff from the sidequests (which you'd avoid -- more talking) and probably get your ass handed to you regularly. It's an RPG first, a shooter second. Really, it's a fairly easy shooter. You should probably look elsewhere for run and gun.

It's supposed to be more like watching a movie. That's the type of game it is.
There are however some killer action sequences.

My mistake, didn't see that thread.

And I'm not necessarily looking for "run and gun," I knew it was an RPG before I started, but it's starting off REALLY slowly. I'm not expecting constant action, but I thought there would be a little bit more than 20 minutes worth in the first 4 hours :( The leveling and abilities are cool, but I've barely had a chance to really use them.

Once you leave the "Station" and start runing offworld quests the action can get very intense. I love this game and the ending is friggin EPIC !

Any idea roughly how long that is after the council meeting about Saren?

SLIGHT SPOILER

after you're made a spectre, and you have to start going around the galaxy and landing on mission planets, things pick up 200%.

END REALLY SLIGHT SPOILER

Metal Gear Solid 4 is another story driven game. Unfortunately, the story was pretty lame...
I hope that Mass Effect's story is more compelling.

Your playing the wrong game if you wanna run and gun, seriously. This game is a slower but still action filled RPG and its awesome at what it does. Story is the primary reason to play this game , I wouldn't play it if it wasn't for the amazing story line.

Hmm, I tried the demo and went meh, because it was so darn slow. I might pick it up again...

Yeah we already covered that, you're a little late to the party :p

And like I said I know it's an RPG but so was Oblivion and I never went 3 hours without killing anything in that game. Just saying.

The game picks up more when you get to go to planets and blast through the stations there. The side quests to inspect artifacts or whatever they are called will probably bore you.

The entire ending of the game is a lot of action and really fun.

I didnt do any sidequests, exploring, or in depth crap. I hate rpgs and I blew this game away on Normal. I had some trouble on a few parts but I owned everybody and beat the final boss battle on my first try (vanguard)

Does this mean you liked the game or not...I'm confused.

Just follow the Renegade path and try to be the biggest jerk you can to everyone. Channel your inner EA executive. It's almost fun and takes some of the monotony out of it.

The problem with video game story lines is the fact that they're video game story lines. Oblivion had a terrible story line, but I loved the mechanics, the open world, the creatures, the loot and the multitude of quests. If ME is anything like that I'd be interested, but it will take me months to finish a game like that.

See, I like mass effect just fine, but i find the vehicle based parts horribly boring. To be honest right now I havent played in a week because Im on some planet where I need to drive all around in that stupid APC and I just dont have the heart to do it. Its just so mind numbingly boring. The rest of the game is fine.

Agreed, exploring planets with the horrible Mako is definitely the absolute low in Mass Effect. Anytime my location indicator would take me into the face of a massive mountain range, I just let out a huge sigh, broke out the whip, and forced myself on. I HATE THE MAKO.

Then you'll be happy to hear they took out the Mako in ME2 :p

I guess I'm the only person that kind of liked wandering around on planets looking for stuff with the Mako, then...

I wasn't a huge fan of the Mako, mainly because its movement mechanics sucked and most of the missions you played with it were cut-and-paste identical in a lot of ways... the side quests I've played in Mass Effect 2 are a bit more interesting on the whole, but the less number of planets you can land on makes the game feel more "sparse"..

No, I liked the mako too. Its controls were just like driving any vehicle in BF2 or any other vehicle in any other game. I guess that's hard for some people? It was infinitely better than the craptastic resource scanner minigame in ME2.

To the OP: Mass Effect is not a video game. It is more like a "video novel." Switch paradigms, and it will be one of the best pieces of digital entertainment you will ever encounter. Treat it like you're reading a book, not like you're playing a video game. You have to invest time and effort into understanding the plot and exploring all the dialogue. It is very thoughtful and deep, so do devote time to it. If you are still bored, then maybe you are too ADD to play this game ;) (kiddinggggg)

seriously dude, do even a tiny bit of homework and you'll realize that you'll spend more time talking in this game than fighting. Go play your Halo games if you want to hear your gun go off and see things die. Leave the top notch Bioware plots to people who understand them and appreciate them.

I didnt have any trouble driving the mako, its just boring as hell. The only reason I havent beaten the game is because I just have no desire to beat a few or the parts where you need the mako.

OMFG HAlo pwns!1one  Mass Effect is one of the most exciting games ever.

Seriously, I wish there was a score that measured the attention spans of players who prefer games like Halo vs games like Mass Effect. Would be enlightening. Same type of people who would prefer diablo II to a baldurs gate II.

There is no reasoning with them, best to let them enjoy their cattle feed and stop trying to convince them that the salmon taste better.

amen, it is amazing how many people are completely satisfied and actually perfer hearing their gun go off in a wack-a-mole, mindless killing game over an extremely elaborate and complicated plot filled RPG like ME1 and ME2.

I mean, if that is to their liking, good for them. I however, cannot get enough RPGs like Mass Effect and pretty much anything else from Bioware thus far.

i may buy this it looks quite good

Do not buy ME2 without playing the first one. It is very important that you play the first game first. ME2 is less a sequel and more of of an actual and literal continuation of the Mass Effect 1. Nearly every choice you make in the first one has major ramifications in the second one and obviously the third when it is released. You can get it off steam for very cheap if you havent already played it. DO IT!

Sit back and enjoy the story. This is the space opera genre we're talking about here - if you enjoy Star Wars, chances are you may enjoy Mass Effect (and ME2).

If you want a mindless FPS, go play Counterstrike or Call of Duty MW2.

I also found Mass Effect (the first one) to be boring as hell.

And I liked pretty much all other well rated RPG's. KOTOR, dragon age origins, vampire the masquerade bloodlines, baldur's gate, jade empire, and so on.

Somehow mass effect just never seemed interesting in any way.

My primary memory of the game is spending hours driving around the surfaces of barren planets on the slow moving Mako with its bizarre physics, looking for mineral deposits which ultimately turned out to be totally meaningless. I don't recall anything else about it being any too interesting either, though.

And, that having been said, I've already bought ME 2 and it's being shipped to me. As everyone seems to love it and says that everything they didn't like about the first one is gone, hopefully I will like this one.

Did you beat ME1? Plenty of ME1 fans still complained about the mako adventures. I didn't mind it. The gamebanshee.com map layouts helped me fasttrack the random planets. The game picks up well at the end.

You dont have to drive around on any planet surfaces that you don't want to. Resources are just for money and XP and you can get plenty of that without tagging resources. Mass effect's plot is so thick that I find it strange that you enjoy many RPGs and not this one. Seriously, give it another shot and play straight through the plot line as it is an absolute must in order to play the 2nd one. You will be so freakin lost if you don't complete ME1 as ME2 is a complete continuation of the first one (everything that happens is result of the choices made in the first game.

If you can't muster up the gumption to play through the first one because you found the plot too boring, you won't want to play the 2nd one.

p.s. I thought the mako was increadibly easy to control. I wonder why so many others had problems

Here I was sitting here, thinking this thread was going to be about someone who can't stop playing Mass Effect and wonders if he'll ever be able to stop.

Seriously, the beginning half of the game is kind of sort of slow. I couldn't get in to on 360, or at least my first time. But I played through it on PC and holy guacamole I love it. The beginning half isn't too bad though. Play through it, once the story starts actually falling in to place you'll become engrossed as I did. I've finished ME2 and am working on my 2nd/3rd play throughs. I can't stop.

For whatever reason the highlighted part made me laugh. Bizarre physics is too weak a concept to describe the mako.

In some ways, it could stick to ridiculous inclines better than spiderman, couple times I swore I saw the thing crawling upside down, but have that same vehicle run over a pebble on the ground and the multi ton machine launches into a tailspin so violent it looks like a loose propeller flying through the air.

Ah the mako.
