does internet speed and connection problems relate to internal hardware?

hi all,

sorry for the long title there. I am having a heck of a time with my router and the one next door (not mine). If I connect to either, my connection speed for internet access is extremely slow and I get messages in my status bars like:

  • resolving proxy
  • sending request
  • waiting for...URL
  • etc, etc...

these messages can hang for over a minute before something happens. Is this possibly a problem with my internal hardware, like the board, processors or memory? I have an extremely fast desktop, one laptop that is failing (hardware wise) and a little netbook that also has the same problem (.99GB ram). all 3 have the same issues, regardless of whether I use my Qwest modem, or the one next door that is unsecured. I also have two adapters, a Qwest brand and netgear. Both suck.

Can someone identify for me any issues, if relevant, with my systems? I don't abuse my machines, I don't play any games. But I do know that both my desktop browsers and laptop browsers have seen sites like youtube, porn, myspace, and all the other crap that downloads unwanted junk onto the local machine. could that possibly be my problems, and if so, what precautions I can take to fix it? I've got AVG, Spybot, etc...

thanks guys!

the other thing i'd like to add is: WHY is this website so fast? :D Apparently there are intelligent people running this place?

This site is all text, no pictures... it should always load faster

Sounds like its a local problem ... stuff like that always lasts an hour, to a day MAX. and then it will just randomly be fast again.

You can try rebooting your modem AND router. Just unplug them both (the power) for 1 minute, then plug them back in and see if it works better. If that does not work, just wait a day and reply back here if you still have issues. (meanwhile, I'd call qwest to see if theres local problems in your area)
