Does Intel C606 Chipset REQUIRE Xeon?

I know it's socket 2011, I was wondering if I got a dual-socket board, if I could run two 3930k's in it instead of two xeons. Can't seem to find an answer on this one. Thanks ahead of time.

The DP capable Xeons have an extra QPI link. The 3930K does not, and is limited to 1P configurations.

It will work with a single 3930k (maybe, depends on BIOS), but you will not be able to use the second socket. Only dual-QPI Xeons (not all of them are) will work for dual socket mode.

The Gigabyte X79 UP5 uses the C606 chipset and obviously works with i7 processors.

However, as others as said, i7s will not work in dual processor configurations. I believe there are also some cheaper Xeons that only work in 1 processor configurations. You will need Xeons that are designed for dual or quad processor configurations.

Dual socket boards require E5-26xx cpu's, whether they use C602 or C606. Some will also work with E5-46xx Cpu's. I have not seen any reports of anyone getting a standard i7 to work in a 2p board even in 1p

26xx and 46xx may work in a single socket board but no guarantee's
